Sarah Elliott (1792 – 1880)
Sarah Reeves was born circa 1729 in Newbury. She married James Elliott on 27 April 1818 at St Nicolas in Newbury. James was born circa 1788 in Newbury.
In the 1841 census James and Sarah with sons Edwin aged 20 and Frederick aged 15 were living in Northbrook Street in Newbury with James and Edwin recorded as upholsterers and Frederick as a cabinet maker.
James committed suicide by hanging himself on 7 May 1848 in his workshop in Northbrook Street. A report of the inquest appeared in the Reading Mercury dated 14 May 1848. James was buried on 12 May 1848 at St Mary in Speenhamland.
In the 1851 census Sarah with son Frederick aged 28 was living at 3 Northbrook Street in Newbury with Sarah recorded as upholsteress and Frederick as a cabinet maker.
Sarah was recorded living by herself in Raymond’s Almhouses in the 1861 census. She was still living at the same abode in the 1871 census.
Sarah died 18 November 1880 at Raymond’s Almhouses and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 22 November 1880. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 25 November 1880 for Sarah which read as below:-
ELLIOTT – Nov.18, at Raymond’s Almhouses, Newbury, Sarah, widow of the late James Elliott, aged 88.
In the same edition of the Newbury Weekly News of 25 November a vacancy was announced in Raymond’s Almhouses following the death of Mrs. Sarah Elliott who had enjoyed an occupancy of 30 years, and it is estimated had received during that time £700 from the charity.
