Henry Phillips was born on 10 July 1849 in Cheltenham, the son of John and Matilda. In the 1851 and 1861 censuses Henry was recorded with his parents and various siblings in Cheltenham. His father John was recorded as a boot and shoe maker in 1851 and a cordwainer in 1861. Henry was a labourer in 1861, aged only 11. Then in the 1871 census Henry was living in Badgeworth in Gloucestershire with his parents and four siblings and he was an agricultural labourer.   

 

Henry married Harriett Wasley on 20 September 1873 at Holy Trinity in Badgeworth. Both Henry and Harriett were living in Badgeworth at the time of the marriage and Henry was a gardener. Harriett was born in 1848 in Staverton in Gloucestershire, the daughter of William and Hannah. She was baptized on 20 February 1848 at St Catherine in Staverton. She was recorded with her parents and siblings in Staverton in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, her father William was a gardener, In the 1871 census she was recorded with her parents in Badgeworth.

 

In the 1881 census Henry and Harriett were recorded living in Boddington in Gloucestershire along with adopted daughter Jesse Blanche Phillips aged two, Henry was a market gardener. Ten years later in the 1891 census Henry and Harriett and daughter Jesse were living in the London Rowing Club in Putney, Henry was a steward and Harriett a stewardess.

 

By the time of the 1901 census Henry and Harriett had moved to The Cedars in Enborne, Henry was a farmer. They were still living at The Cedars when the 1911 census was taken, Henry was still a farmer and Harriett was assisting in the business.

 

Ten years later in the 1921 census Henry and Harriett were staying with their daughter Jesse Goddard and her husband Ernest at 4 Southampton Terrace, Newtown Road in Newbury. Henry was retired and had no occupation.

 

Harriett died on 8 December 1925 aged 77 while living at 8 Greenham Road and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 11 December.

 

When the national register was compiled in September 1939 Henry was still living at 8 Greenham Road and was recorded as a retired gardener.

 

Henry died on 13 January 1940 aged 90 still living at 8 Greenham Road and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 16 January.
