Harriet Tuck
1843-1880
Harriet, her parents, siblings and early life:
Harriet was born 1843 in Hampshire, the daughter of William and Mary Anne Read (nee Dawkins) who were married on the 2nd December 1841 in West Tytherley, Hampshire.
Her father William was baptised on the 2nd October 1814 in West Dean, Wiltshire, the son of George (a Labourer) and Ann Dean (nee Tubb) who were married on the 20th June 1814 in West Dean, Wiltshire.
Her mother Mary was baptised on the 17th June 1821 in West Tytherley, Hampshire, the daughter of George (a Labourer) and Elizabeth Dawkins (nee Scoates) who were married on the 4th December 1820, in West Tytherley.
William and Mary also had the following children (all baptised in West Tytherley):
Ellen baptised 6th April 1845 (William recorded as a Labourer)
George baptised 13th February 1848 (William recorded as a Labourer)
Andrew baptised 3rd March 1850 (William recorded as a Higgler)
Mark baptised 3rd July 1853 (William recorded as a Pedlar)
Alice baptised 7th June 1857 (William recorded as a Labourer)
In 1851 Harriet (8) was recorded living in a cottage in West Tytherley, with her father William (36), a Rag Gatherer, her mother Mary Ann (29) (recorded as Marianne) and her siblings, Ellen (6), George (3) and Andrew (1). Harriet’s grandparents George (57) and Ann Read (54) and Harriet’s great grandfather Isaac Tubb (79) were living in the cottage, next door.

Groom: John Cook, aged 20, bachelor, occupation, Labourer, abode, West Tytherley
Bride: Harriet Read, aged 18, spinster, abode, West Tytherley
Fathers: Thomas Cook and William Read, both Labourers
In 1861 John Cook (20), an Agricultural Labourer and Harriet Cook (18) were recorded living with Harriet’s father William (46), a Woodman’s Labourer, her mother Mary Ann (43) and her siblings, Ellen (16), George (13), Mark (8) and Alice (3)
John and Harriet had a daughter, Mary Jane Cook, born c1864, baptised 3rd July 1864, in Mottisfont, Hampshire.
Harriet in later life:
By 1866 Harriet and John were no longer together. Harriet had formed a relationship with Solomon Tuck.
(Solomon and his twin sister Mary Ann were baptised on the 25th September 1833, the children of John and Mary Tuck (John was recorded as a Lodging House Keeper on the baptism record) (Mary Ann died aged 10 weeks, she was buried on the 16th December 1833 at St Nicolas Newbury)
Harriet and Solomon had the following children:
Edward George born 1866 in Reading
Solomon born 1868 in Newbury (died aged 18 months in 1870, buried in the NRC on the 20th June)
Alice Elizabeth born 1871 in Newbury
The 1871 census records Solomon as a Traveller (Ironman), living in the City, Newbury, Berkshire, with Harriet (30), their children Mary (6) (this was Mary Cook), Edward (4), Alice (3 months) and Solomon’s nephew Mark Tuck (8) (son of his brother Mark and his wife Margaret Tuck).
Harriet and Solomon married in 1872 (Harriet, using her maiden name)
Marriage details:
Place: Binsted, Southampton, Hampshire
Date: 2nd October 1872
Groom: Solomon Tuck, aged 32, bachelor, occupation, Labourer, abode, Newbury
Bride: Harriet Read, aged 30, spinster, abode, Binsted
Fathers: William Read and John Tuck, both Labourers
In 1873 Harriet gave birth to another daughter, Louisa Frances, born in Newbury
Harriet died on the 20th May 1880, at Percy Place, Newbury, (age at death recorded as 40) she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th May.
In 1881 Harriet’s daughter Mary Jane Cook (17) was recorded living in Oakley Road, Mottisfont, with her grandparents Wiliam and Mary Dean. Alice Tuck (11) and Louisa Tuck (7) were recorded in the Newbury Workhouse. (No record found for Soloman in this census)
Solomon died aged 48 on the 23rd November 1886 in the Reading, he was buried in on the 25th November at the London Road Cemetery, Reading.
