William Stevens (1822 – 1880)
William Stevens (1822 – 1880)
William died 9 May 1880 at Newbury Union Workhouse. He was aged 57 according to his death certificate but recorded as 58 on his headstone. He was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 12 May 1880.
An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 13 May 1880 as below.
STEVENS May 9, at the Workhouse, Newbury, William Stevens, aged 57.
William’s headstone stated that he was from Heath and Reach in Bedfordshire but had died in Newbury.
It is possible that William was baptized on 20 January 1822 at Heath and Reach with parents Thomas and Elizabeth Stevens. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to trace this William in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses.
