Charles Alder
c1817-1880
Charles, his parents, siblings and early life:
Charles was baptised on the 29th March 1817 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, Berkshire, the son of John and Charlotte Alder (nee Langton) who were married on the 17th June 1809 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Charles worked as a Labourer/Agricultural Labourer
His father John was baptised in in 1788 in Lambourn, Berkshire, the son of William and Mary Alder (nee Dudly) who were married on the 10th October 1777 at St Michael & All Angels, Lambourn. John worked as a Labourer/Agricultural Labourer.
His mother Charlotte was baptised in 1786 in Newbury Berkshire, the daughter of John and Mary Langton.
Charlotte died aged 66 on Friday the 18th October 1861 and John died the following day, aged 76. They were buried together on Tuesday the 22nd October 1861 at St Mary, Greenham
John and Charlotte also had the following children:
John baptised on 27th July 1809 at St Nicolas Newbury (born the same day)
Mary Ann baptised 10th April 1814 at St Nicolas Newbury
Thomas baptised 26th November 1820 at St Mary Greenham
Sarah baptised 22nd December 1822 at St Mary Greenham
William baptised 5th November 1826 at St Mary Greenham
The 1815 census of Newbury records John (30), Charlotte (29) and their children John (6) and Mary Ann (2), living in Quarrington’s Yard, on the east side of Mary Hill, Newbury.
The 1841 census records John (50), Charlotte (50) and their sons Thomas (15) and William (10) living in Greenham Common, Berkshire.
The 1851 and 1861 census records record John & Charlotte living in Stroud Green, Greenham. Charles (25) was recorded living on the south side of Enborne Road, Newbury. (Surname recorded as Alson on ancestry)
Charles in later life:
Charles married Mary Ann Tidbury on the 23rd October 1842 in Thatcham, Berkshire.
(Mary Ann was baptised on the 5th December 1824 in at St Mary, Greenham the illegitimate daughter of Hannah Tidbury)
Charles and Mary Ann had the following children:
Louisa 1843 in Newbury
Emma 1845 in Newbury
Sarah Ann 1847 in Newbury
Hannah Maria 1849 in Newbury
Thomas 1851 in Newbury, baptised 30th November 1851 at St Nicolas Church Newbury
Mary 1854 in Newbury
Harriet baptised 28th December 1856 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (died in September 1857)
Eliza Matilda 1858 in Newbury
William 1860 in Newbury
Charles 1862 in Newbury
Charlotte c1864 in Newbury
John Henry 1866 in London
The family were recorded living off Bartholomew Street, (possibly Hereford Place) Newbury in 1851, Caroline Place Newbury in 1861 and Independent Chapel Yard, off Northbrook Street, Newbury in 1871.
Charles died on the 3rd March 1880 (aged at death recorded as 66) he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th March.
The 1881 census records his widow Mary (60) working as an Upholsterer, living in Cromwell Place, Newbury with her sons William (20) and John Henry (14).
In 1891 she was recorded living with her married daughter Louisa Grant and her family in Delvan Street, Woolwich.
Mary Ann died aged 69 in 1892 in Woolwich.
