Transciption: | THOMAS VENNELL HINDS HINDS - February 2nd 1880 at "the Drummers" . Northcroft Lane, after a long and painful illness, Thomas Vennell Hinds, aged 46 - Deeply lamented by a sorrowing family.
Presumably this is Sergeant Thomas Hinds, referred to in Richard Godfrey's book "Newbury Borough Police 1836-1875" ISBN 978-0-9560926-0-1
1. Page 48: "... three applicants for the post, Thomas Hinds ..... Hinds was the successful candidate and he subsequently took up his duties as Sergeant on 21 October, 1857. Hinds was aged 25 years, a married man with two children. Until the time of his appointment he had been a serving officer, Pc1 12 in the newly formed Berkshire County Constabulary and a Constable in the Metropolitan Police before that. He had earlier been employed on the railway."
2. Page 51: ... two temporary night patrol officers ... were appointed to the force in place of Sergeant Hinds ans Pc Justice, who were both on long term sick leave."
3. Page 55: Sgt Hinds gives evidence at an inquest in a case of double murder.
4. Pages 59/60: " ... problems arose when Sergeant Hinds, who was called as a witness to prove the case, admitted during cross-examination to taking part in after-hours drinking at the premises on the night in question, and remaining there well into the early hours." ... "The unfortunate sergeant appears to have submitted his resignation immediately after the court hearing." And so on.
5. His service is summarised on page 133, resigning on 19 Sep 1867. |
