James Hatt
c1805-1879
According to census records James was born c1805 in Aldbourne Wiltshire. He married Elizabeth Wright on the 15th September 1833 at St Nicolas Church Newbury both were single and made their mark. Witnesses were Richard Wright and Elizabeth Brunsdon.
James and Elizabeth had two daughters.
Eliza Ann born in Newbury c1835 she was baptised on the 3rd May 1835 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (James was recorded as a Horse Keeper)
Sarah was born in Newbury in1837 she was baptised on the 24th September 1837 at St Nicolas Church Newbury (James was recorded as an Ostler). Sarah died later that year.
The 1841 census records James (35) as a Horstler, (Ostler) Elizabeth (40) and Eliza (6) living on the east side of Northbrook Street Newbury.
In both the 1851 and 1861 census records the family were recorded living in Jack of Newbury Street Newbury.
In 1851 James (48) was recorded as a Stableman, his daughter Eliza (15) was recorded as a Dressmaker. Also in the household was a visitor, Sarah Field (Elizabeth’s married sister).
In 1861 James (56) was recorded as disabled, formerly an Ostler. His daughter Eliza (26) was again recorded as a Dressmaker. She married Richard Allen Prestoe in Newbury later that year.
By 1871 James (67), an Annuitant and Elizabeth (75) were living in Northcroft Lane Newbury
They both died in 1879 Elizabeth died aged 84 on the 28th November she was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd December. James died aged 73 on the 8th December he was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th December.
