MRS JOB HAINES

BEGS to return her sincere thanks to the Farmers and Corn Dealers generally, for the liberal support received by her late Husband for upwards of 20 years as Corn Porter, and begs to inform them that the business will in the future be carried on by herself, assisted by her granddaughter, and she begs respectfully to solicit a continuance of their favours

Eleanor, her parents, siblings and early life:

Eleanor (aka Ellen) was baptised on the 29th May 1803 in Midgham, Berkshire, the daughter of Thomas and Ann/Hannah Cooper (nee Childs) who were married at St Mary, Thatcham on the 20th February 1798.

Ellen’s father Thomas was baptised on the 21st September 1777, in Thatcham, the son of William and Eleanor Cooper, (nee Hill) who were married on the 21st October 1771, in Hampshire. Thomas died aged 75 in 1851, he was buried on the 6th May, at St Matthew, Midgham.

Her mother Hannah was born c1777 in Berkshire. Hannah died aged 73 in 1850, she was buried on the 12th January, at St Matthew, Midgham.

Thomas and Hannah/Ann also had the following children:

William, baptised 24th June 1798, in Thatcham

John, baptised 14th December 1800, in Midgham

Thomas, baptised 25th December 1805, in Thatcham

James, baptised 24th December 1815, in Midgham

George Henry, baptised 15th November 1818, in Thatcham

Harriet, baptised 27th January 1822, in Thatcham

The 1841 census records Thomas (60) as a Rod Merchant, living in Midgham, with Hannah (60) and their children George (20) a Rod Merchant and Harriet (19).

In 1851 Thomas (74) was recorded as a Rod Grower, employing 2 men, living in Midgham. His son George (32) was still living with him and was also recorded as a Rod Grower.

Eleanor in later life:

Eleanor married Joel Haines on the 14th October 1819 in Thatcham, Berkshire.

(Joel Haines, was baptised 22nd July 1798, in Thatcham, Berkshire, the son of Joseph and Frances Haynes (nee Emmans) who were married on the 27th October 1792, in Hampstead Norreys, Berkshire).

Joel and Eleanor had the following children:

John, baptised 9th April 1820, in Thatcham

Mary, baptised 1821, in Hampstead Norreys

Thomas, bptised 1823, in Hampstead Norreys

Fanny, baptised 1826, in Hampstead Norreys

William, baptised 1828, in Hampstead Norreys

Eleanor was widowed in 1830, Joel died aged 32, he was buried on the 23rd May 1830, at St Mary the Virgin, Bucklebury, Berkshire.

Eleanor remarried as Ellen Hains on 23rd April 1832, at St Lawrence, Reading, Berkshire. Her 2nd husband was Job Hains (Haines)

(Job was Eleanor’s brother-in- law, Joel’s younger brother. Job was born on the 1st February 1805, he was baptised on the 24th February, in Thatcham, Berkshire, the son of Joseph and Frances Haynes (nee Emmans) who were married on the 27th October 1792, in Hampstead Norreys, Berkshire).

(Possible 1841 census recording on ancestry for: Job, Ellen, John, Mary and William as follows: John Harrison (50), Ellen Harrison (30), John Holms (20), Mary Holms (16) and William Holms (15), living at Clay Hill, Thatcham, Berkshire. (“Image almost illegible”)).        

The 1851 census records Job Haines (46), as a Corn Porter, living at 4 Marsh Terrace, Speenhamland, Berkshire, with Ellen (47) and her granddaughter, Fanny Ann (6).

In 1861 Job (56) was recorded as a Master Corn Porter, living in Back Lane, Newbury, with Ellen (58) and her granddaughters Fanny Ann Vickers (17), a Governess and Alice Haines (10)

The 1871 census records Job (66) as a Corn Porter, living in Wharf Lane Newbury, with Ellen (68) and her granddaughters, Alice Haines (20), a Milliner and Ellen Copperthwaite (6)

Ellen was widowed in 1874. Job died aged 69, on the 20th May. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th May.

Ellen died aged 77 on the 15th October 1879. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th October.

 

Probate: HAINES Ellen     Personal Estate under £200      15th December 1879     Administration of the Personal Estate of Ellen Haines of Newbury in the County of Berks Widow who died 15th October 1879 at Newbury was granted at Oxford to Alice Burton (Wife of Alfed Arthur Burton) of 12 Chain-street Reading in the said County the Granddaughter and one of the Next of Kin
