Francis Henry Adler (1815 – 1879)
Eliza Adler (1817 – 1898)
Francis Henry Adler was born circa 1815 in Newbury, son of George Lewis and Jane, nee Pierce, Adler. In the 1841 census Francis was recorded with his parents and siblings living in Bartholomew Street and a cabinet maker.
Francis married Eliza Elliott on 3 October 1842 at the Congregational Chapel in Newbury. Eliza was born circa 1817 in Newbury, the daughter of George and Mary, nee Mitchell, Elliott. In the 1841 census she was living with her parents in Northbrook Street.
In the 1851 census Francis and Eliza were living with son George Louis aged 8 in Bartholomew Cottages in Newbury and Francis was recorded as a cabinet maker.
Ten years later in the 1861 census Francis and Eliza with son George were residing at The School in Chieveley with Francis recorded as a school master and George as a watchmaker.
Francis and Eliza were living by themselves in Curridge in the 1871 census with Francis recorded as a schoolmaster and Eliza as a sewing mistress.
Francis died 27 June 1879 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 3 July 1879. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 3 July 1879 which read:-
ADLER June 27 Mr. Francis Henry Adler, aged 64 years, for 23 years schoolmaster and organist at Miss Wasey’s Chapel School, Curridge, in the parish of Chieveley. Highly valued and much regretted.
He left a will and administration of his estate was granted to his son George Louis Adler of High Street in Uxbridge, professor of music. The value of the estate was under £4,000.
Two years later in the 1881 census Eliza was living in Belmont Road in Uxbridge and recorded as a retired school mistress. She was still living there in the 1891 census but now recorded as living on her own means.
Eliza died 23 December 1898 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 30 December 1898. An announcement appeared in the Ealing Gazette & West Middlesex Observer dated 31 December 1898 which read:-
ADLER On December 23, at 53, St Andrews, Uxbridge, Eliza Adler, in the 82nd year of her age.
She left a will and probate was granted to her son George Louis Adler, professor of music. The value of the estate was £1,783 15s 8d.
Both Eliza’s parents were also buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, her father George Elliott on 16 October 1865 and her mother Mary Elliott on 25 November 1865.
