Recorder's Notes | Edward was a Mealman of the Town Mills, Newbury. After his death his widow carried on as a Corn Miller emplyoyng 7 men & 1 boy. Their infant sons Edward George Colborn & George Edward are buried behind in ChNWW2. Caroline Ellen attended the Mount Boarding School in East Woodhay aged 11. She died soon after her marriage to Miller Albert Church of Burghclere. After her death Albert married Caroline's sister, Charlotte Anne, against church law but common practice at the time, perhaps explaining their marriage at St Sepulchre's London. They both died at Springfield, Headley and are both buried in this cemetery. Burial & death records give Caroline's age at birth as 22 but her MI states she was 23 years, though she was born in 1859. Transciption: | THE LATE Mr EDWARD KNIGHT.— The remains of Mr. Edward Knight were interred on Saturday, in the Cemetery, the Rev. H. O. Mears officiating, and being followed by the ringers of the Parish Church, who on their return rang a muffled peal in memory of their late leader, this being followed on Sunday by muffled chimes. Mr. Knight was also formerly guardian of the poor and overseer, but failed in obtaining a seat at the Town Council. The deceased for several years past had conducted the business of the Town Mill, which he purchased on the death of his brother, Mr. George Knight. |
