William Paine (1842 – 1925)

                                    Mary Ann Paine (1855 – 1927)

William Paine was born in 1842 in St Pancras in London, the son of James and Elizabeth, nee Smith, Paine. He was baptized on 25 November 1853 at St Pancras old church, his sister Harriet Anne and brother Thomas were baptized on the same day.

In the 1851 census William was recorded with his parents along with his brothers James and Thomas and sister Harriet living in Grove Street in Pancras. His father was a bricklayer. Ten years later in the 1861 census William with his parents and brother Thomas were recorded at 8 Cambridge Crescent in Pancras. William and Thomas were both piano forte makers while their father James was a bricklayer.

William married Sarah Rachel Catts on 23 December 1866 at St Paul in Hammersmith. Sarah was born on 18 July 1841 at St Peter Port in Guernsey, the daughter of Henry and Emma, nee Hawkins, Catts. Henry died on 20 July 1850 and was buried on 24 July at St Peter Port. In the 1851 census Sarah was recorded with her mother Emma and brother Henry in St Peter Port, Emma was a house proprietor. Sarah was admitted to the St Peter Port asylum on three occasions between 1851 and 1853, leaving for the last time on 15 October 1853 when her destination was London. No trace of Sarah in the 1861 census.

In the 1871 census William and Sarah along with their sons William and Charles were recorded in Jeffrey Street in St Pancras. William was a piano forte small work maker. Sarah died in 1876 in Pancras.

William remarried on 30 September 1877 at All Saints in Camden Town to Mary Ann Gilby. Mary was born in 1855 in Balsham in Cambridgeshire. She was baptized on 14 October 1855 at Balsham, the daughter of John and Lucy. In the 1861 census Mary was living with her parents and brothers Henry and Phillip in Swavesey in Cambridgeshire, John was a railway porter. Mary was living in Cambridge as a servant in the 1871 census her occupation was a general domestic servant.

A few years later in the 1881 census William and Mary Ann with children William, Charles, Frederick, Sarah and Edith were recorded at 3 Sussex Terrace in St Pancras with William a piano forte maker.

By the time of the 1891 census William and Mary Ann had moved to 122 Kings Road in Pancras, along with children Frederick (aged 19), Sarah (aged 17) and Edith (aged 12). William was a piano forte finisher, Frederick a stationer’s assistant and Sarah an envelope folder.

William and Mary Ann were still living at 122 Kings Road in 1901, along with children Frederick (aged 29), Edith (aged 22) and Leonard (aged 4). William was a piano forte finisher, Frederick a shop assistant while Edith had no occupation recorded.

In the 1911 and 1921 censuses William and Mary Ann with sons Frederick and Leonard were recorded at 18 Northwood Road in Hornsey. William was a piano tuner finisher in 1911 but by 1921 he had retired.

William died on 25 April 1925 while living at 27 Craven Road in Newbury and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 May. Mary Ann died on 27 December 1927 still living in Craven Road and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 31 December.

Charles Thomas Paine, son of William and Sarah, died on 28 January 1936 aged 66 at Royal Berks Hospital in Reading while living at 36 Berkeley Road in Newbury. He was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 February.
