William Hazell

William was born on the 11th June 1809, he was baptised on the 25th June 1809 at St Mary Greenham, Berkshire, the son of William and Harriet Hazell (nee Whale) who were married on the 2nd January 1803 at St Mary Thatcham, Berkshire.

His father William was a Labourer in his early life, then later, a Publican/Beer Shop Keeper. He was born c1779 in Chaddleworth, Berkshire. He married Lucy Collins on the 5th February 1798 in Peasemore, Berkshire. They had a son Benjamin, born 16th November 1799, baptised at St Mary Greenham on the 24th November 1799. Lucy died in 1800, she was buried on the 17th October at St Mary Greenham. William died aged 76 in 1854 and was buried on the 18th January at St Mary Greenham.

His mother Harriet was born c1783 in Thatcham, Berkshire. She died aged 75 in 1858 and was buried on the 11th September at St Mary Greenham.

William’s siblings were:

Eliza born 17th September 1811, baptised 29th September

Thomas baptised 2nd May 1814

Mary baptised 6th October 1816

John baptised 6th September 1818

Richard baptised 18th February 1821

James baptised 2nd March 1823

Henry baptised 8th May 1825

Joseph baptised 10th August 1828

 

William was an Agricultural Labourer. He married Mary Ann Alder on the 14th October 1838 in Thatcham, Berkshire.

(Mary Ann was baptised on the 10th April 1814 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughter of John and Charlotte Alder (nee Langton) who were married on the 17th June 1809 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.)

Mary Ann had a son Charles before she married William. Charles was baptised in Greenham on the 19th August 1835.

William and Mary Ann had a daughter, Ellen baptised 21st October 1839 in Greenham.

In 1841 William (25), Mary (25), Charles (5) and Ellen (1) were recorded living in Stroud Green, Greenham.

Mary Ann died aged 28 in 1842, she was buried on the 20th March at St Mary Greenham.

In 1851 William (37) was recorded living with his parents William (72), a Beer Shop Keeper and Harriet (64), in Greenham Common, Berkshire. His daughter Ellen (10), a Domestic Servant, was living with her grandparents John and Charlotte Alder, in Stroud Green, Greenham.  His son Charles (16) was working as an Indoor Servant for a John Goddard, a Farmer, in Wash Road, Newbury.

William remarried in 1866 (marriage registered in Newbury). His 2nd wife was Harriet Wickens (a widow).

(Harriet (nee Brown) was born c1813 in Greenham, Berkshire. She married James Wickens in 1842 (marriage registered in Newbury). They had a daughter Elizabeth born in 1845. James died in 1853).

The 1871 census records William (69) living in Greenham Common, Newbury with his wife Harriet (57).

Harriet died aged 62 in 1873, she was buried on the 5th July at St Mary Greenham

William died on the 8th October 1877 in the Newbury Workhouse, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th October. (Age at death recorded as 76)
