AMY MARGUERITE MATTHEWS

The Late Mrs Matthews

The death took place suddenly on Marsh 14th of Mrs Amy Marguerite Matthews, widow of the Rev. Charles Matthews, for thirty years the minister of the Waterside Chapel, Newbury.  The deceased had recently been conducting a boarding house at Ilfracombe, the the body was brought by road to Newbury for interment in her husband’s grave in the Newtown road Cemetery.  The body rested in the chapel overnight, and the funeral service was conducted in the old-world meeting house on Thursday afternoon.  The Rev. Arthur Pearson sympathetically officiated, offering consolation to the bereaved relatives.  These included the Misses Ada and Ella Matthews (daughters), Miss E Lockeyear (sister).  Among friends present were Dr Richard Hickman, Mr Walter HBell, Mr Thomas H Stillman, Miss Stillman, Miss Harland, Mrs Salkeld, Mrs E Russell, Mrs Fred Bance, Mr Wat Bance, MrandMrs Ashley Turner, Mr F Stillman and others.

Floral offerings were contributed by the daughters: Misses Emily, Jane and Ellen Lockeyear;  Mr E Lockeyear; Mr J Lockeyear ad amily; Mr and Mrs Fred Bance and Wat; Mrs Marston and family; Mr and Mrs Hesketh; Mrs Price and Miss M E Tucker; Miss Ada Bullock; Mr and Mrs Clarke and family.  The undertakers were Messrs Camp Hopson and Co.
