Thomas William Samuel Slocock (b 23 Febraury 1844 in Shaw Rectory- died Q1 1877 in R.D. Bradford W). Son of Samuel (9.07) and Emily. He was shown, aged 17, in the 1861 census at Speen, near Newbury, living in the house of Silas and Emily Palmer, his mother and step father. He was a clerk in Holy Orders according to the marriage certificate of his son. He was a curate of Kingswinford, East Stonehouse, Devon, 1870-72; Swindon 1872-3; Sternfield, Suffolk 1873-74.
He married firstly Jesse Harriette Mills (b.,c.1843-d 1876 in Newbury RD) on 10 August 1864 at St John the Evangelist, Notting Hill. She was the great neice of Sir Joseph Paxton (1801-1865) who designed the cast iron and glass structure (nicknamed the Crystal Palace) for the Great Exhibition of 1851.
In 1864 [corrected to 1874] Thomas was declared bankrupt. The London Gazette published the notice:
In the County Court of Suffolk holden at Ipswich. In the matter of proceedings for liquidation by arrangement or composition with creditors instituted by Thomas Samuel William Slocock of Snape near Saxmundham in the county Suffolk and late of Swindon in Wiltshire, Clerk in Holy Orders. Notice is hereby given that a first general meeting of the creditors of the above named person has been summoned to be held at the office of Mr. Joseph Pearce, Accountant, situate in Princes Street, Ipswich in the county of Suffolk, on the 24th day of January 1874 at 3 o'clock in the afternoon precisely.
Quite what career Thomas followed after his bankruptcy isn't known but he seems to have left the Church. Thomas married again soon after Jessie's death to Jane Styles (Jennie or Janie) in the fourth quarter of 1876 in Yarmouth registration district. Jennie was born about 1853 at Saxmundham, Suffolk. Within a year of this second marriage Thomas was dead. It must have been a daunting prospect for Janie, his widow, being left with two stepchildren aged 10 and 8. She obviously decided she wasn't up to the task of bringing them up herself and we know from the 1881 census that young Jessie was living with her grand mother, Eliza Mills, in Newbury. Alfred's whereabouts is not known- he hasn't yet been found in the census. Janie is shown in the 1881 census as a housekeeper to an unmarried farmer in Dagenham, Essex, who was employing 4 men and 3 boys. She subsequently remarried in the third quarter of Yarmouth RD ( ref. 4B 44) Thomas had two children by his first marriage : Jessie Emily 11.11 Alfred Montague Samuel 11.12 From a print out from an unidentified book
