John William Hazell
1882-1921
John William’s birth was registered in the September quarter in Newbury, as William John Hazell. All later documents record him as John William.
John’s father was Albert Hazel, born on the 12th November 1852 in Newbury, the son of John and Eleanor (aka Ellen) Hazell (nee Curtis) who were married in 1846 in Newbury. Albert died aged 92 on the 3rd February 1945, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with his wife Julia, on the 7th February.
His mother was Julia Hannah Parker, born in 1854 in Newbury, the illegitimate daughter of Lydia Parker. Julia died aged 74 on the 26th February 1930, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd March.
John’s parents were married on the 3rd February 1878 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.
Julia already had a daughter Martha Ellen (aka Ellen) Parker who was born on the 3rd February 1877.

In 1881 the family were living at 1 Clare Place, Newbury, Albert was working as a General Labourer.
By 1891 the family had moved to 10 Shrewsbury Terrace, Newbury, Albert was recorded as a Labourer in the census for this year.
The 1901 census records John (19) as a Railway Porter, boarding at 19 Phoenix Park Terrace, Basingstoke, Hampshire.
John married in 1907.

Witnesses: Sidney James White, Albert Hazell and Kastie Mable White (possibly Mabel Kate White, Annie Louisa’s sister)
Bride and Groom both signed
(Annie Louisa was born on the 16th January 1886 in Shepton Mallet, the daughter of Sidney James and Mary Ann White (nee Stock) who were married in 1885 in Shepton Mallet)
John and Annie had the following children:
Phyllis Rose born 22nd August 1908 in Chipping Sodbury
Twins: Dorothy Annie and Albert Sidney John born 1st Dec 1910 in Chipping Sodbury (Albert died aged 12 days)
Edward Albert born 3rd May 1913 in Newbury
And a daughter born in 1920 in Newbury
The 1911 census records John (28) as a Railway Checker, living in Blanchards Brook, Old Sodbury, with Annie (25), their two daughters, Phyllis (2) and Dorothy (4 months) and a boarder.
By 1920 the family were living in Railway Road Newbury.
John died aged 38 on the 31st May 1921 at Knights Farm, Bagnor, Newbury, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th June.
The 1939 Register records Annie living at 2 Link Road, Newbury. She continued to live in Link Road until at least 1959. By 1960 she was living at 10 Rowan Drive, Newbury.
Annie died aged 77 on the 30th March 1963, she was laid to rest next to her husband John, on the 3rd April.
