William Poulton

c1808-1876

William was baptised on the 23rdJune 1808, at St Mary the Virgin, Great Leighs, Essex, the son of William and Mary Poulton (nee Helen/Helan/Helem) who were married on the 25thMay 1802, in Great Leighs.

William and Mary also had a daughter, Elizabeth Sarah, baptised on the 24thOctober 1805, at St Mary the Virgin, Great Leighs.

William married Susanna Mountford on the 24thDecember 1830, at Maldon, All Saints and St Peter, Essex.

(Susannah was baptised on the 15thMay 1808, at St Michael the Archangel, Great Sampford, Essex, the daughter of James and Mary Mountford (nee Willett) who were married on the 19thDecember 1799, in Great Sampford).

William and Susannah had the following children:

Mountford, baptised 23rd October 1831, at St Andrew, Weeley, Essex

William James, baptised 14th October 1832, at St Andrew, Weeley

Emma, baptised 9th March 1834, at St Andrew, Weeley

Elizabeth, baptised 26th July 1835, at St Andrew, Weeley (died age 2, buried 21st Oct. 1837, in Great Bentley)

Robert, born c1838, in Great Bentley

Walford, born 1840, in Great Bentley

Joseph, born 1842, in Great Bentley

In 1841 William (30), a Baker, Susannah (30) and their children, Mountford (9), James (8), Robert (3) and Walford (1), were recorded living in Great Bentley, Essex.

William was widowed in 1847, Susannah died aged 36, she was buried on the 19thJanuary, at St Mary the Virgin, Great Bentley.

The 1851 census records William (42), as a Carrier, employing 1 man, living in Plough Road, Great Bentley, with his sons, Mountford (19), a School Master, Walford (10) and Joseph (8).

William remarried in 1852. His 2nd wife was Mary Burling (marriage registered in the March quarter, in Tendring). They had a daughter, Elizabeth Ann, born later that year.

William was widowed again in 1857. Mary died aged 42 (death registered in Maldon, Essex)

In 1861 William (52), a Servant, was lodging with a Thomas Dines and his family, in Great Bentley, Essex.

 In 1871 William (63) was recorded living in Lambourne, Essex, with his children, Joseph (29), a Grocer’s Assistant and Elizabeth Ann (18), a Milliner.

By 1876 William was living in Newbury, Berkshire.

He died aged 69 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7thDecember 1876.
