Richard was born circa 1813 at Speen the son of Richard Gunter & Elizabeth Hughes. He married Emma Aldridge on 31 July 1836 at St Michaels in Inkpen. Emma was born circa 1811 in West Woodhay & died 30 June 1851 in Speenhamland, she was buried 3 July 1851 at St Mary the Virgin in Speen. Richard & Emma had five children.

 

Richard remarried on 7 October 1860 at St Mary the Virgin in Speen to Harriet Hawkins. Harriet was born 18 July 1839 in Compton the daughter of Charles Hawkins & Sarah Archer. Richard & Harriet had seven children between 1861 & 1876 all born in Newbury or Speenhamland.

 

The youngest daughter & sixth child Sarah Jane Gunter was born 19 December 1872 in Speenhamland. She sadly died October 1876 & was buried 25 October 1876 at Newtown Road Cemetery.

 

In the 1871 census Richard & Harriet with three children were living at Motlands Cottages in Greenham & Richard was recorded as a bricklayers labourer. In the 1881 census Richard & his daughter Mary Jane aged ten were both living in Newbury Union Workhouse with Richard recorded as a bricklayer. No trace of Harriet in the 1881 census.

 

Richard died 2 November 1886 at Newbury Union Workhouse from ulcer of leg & gangrene. He was buried 6 November 1886 at Newtown Road Cemetery after a service at St Nicholas in Newbury. The cemetery fees were 5s 6d & the clergyman's fee was 5s 0d.

 

Harriet died 9 March 1901 at Newbury Union Workhouse from phtisis (consumption of the lung or tuberculosis). She was buried 13 March 1901 at Newtown Road Cemetery. The cemetery fees were 6s 0d & the clergyman's fee was 5s 0d.
