Martha Collins

Martha Collins

c1827-1876

 

Martha New was born in Newbury she was the daughter of Daniel (born c1792 in Berkshire) and Lucy New (nee Brindley) (born c1794 in Staffordshire) who were married on the 8th July 1826 at St Mary’s Reading Berkshire.

Martha’s mother Lucy was a widow when she married Daniel, her 1st husband was Thomas Wootton (from Wantage) they married on the 11th July 1812 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Thomas and Lucy had 7 daughters, sadly only their daughter Jane survived to adulthood. Thomas died in 1825.

Daniel and Lucy also had the following children:

The 1841 census records Daniel (45), Draper, Lucy (40), Jane (20), (born Jane Wootton) Martha (15), Lucy (12), John (8) and Charles (6), living in Wash Road Newbury.

Martha married Edwin (middle name Danbridge but married as Edwin) Collins in 1849

Marriage details:

Place: St Nicolas Church Newbury

Date: 31st March 1849

Groom: Edwin Collins, Widower, occupation: Engineer

Bride: Martha New, Spinster

Fathers: Daniel New and Edward Collins, (Edward was a Millwright)

Witnesses: Daniel Challis and Martha Stillman

 

Edwin and Martha had the following children:

Agnes 1852

Edwin 1852-1856

Edward 1857-1858

Brice 1859

Annie 1861

In both the 1851 and 1861 census records the family were recorded living in Pleasant Place Newbury, in the 1861 census Edwin was recorded as an Engineer and Master employing 2 men.

Edwin died in 1862 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st October. (Edwin was recorded in the NRC burial records as Edward D Collins. GRO records his age at death as 33, NBI records his age at death as 34)

The 1871 census records Martha (40), Dressmaker, Agnes (19), Dressmaker, Brice (11) and Annie (9) living in Edward Cottages Newbury.

Martha’s father Daniel died aged 79 in 1871 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th October.

Martha died aged 49 in 1876 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st March.

Martha’s mother Lucy died aged 85 on the 9th July 1879 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th July
