Walter Ryde West
1875-1875
Walter was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Samuel and Emily West (nee Clements) who were married in 1868 (marriage registered in Newbury)
Walter died aged 6 months on the 8th December 1875, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th December.
Walter’s family:
His father Samuel was born in 1846, in Reading, Berkshire, the son of Samuel and Hannah West (nee Ride) who were married in 1842, in Reading.
His mother Emily was born in 1847, Hurstbourne Tarrant, Hampshire, the daughter of George and Sarah Clements (nee Ashley) who were married in 1847, (marriage registered in Newbury)
Walter’s siblings were:

Gordon, 1885
John William, 1892
The 1871 census records Samuel (25), a Grocer’s Shopman and Emily (23), living at 2 New Street, Newbury (near the “Cooper’s Arms”). Emily’s parents, George and Sarah Clements and her sister Ellen were living next door at number 1.
In 1881 Samuel (34) a Grocer’s Assistant, Emily (33), their children, Arthur (9), Samuel (4), Frank (1), Harry (5 months) and Emily’s widowed father George Clements (54), a Retired Carrier, were recorded living in Carnarvon Terrace, Newbury, Berkshire. Their daughter Emily (7) was recorded living at 34 Northbrook Street, Newbury, with her aunt, Ellen Turner (32), her uncle, Thomas Turner (41) and her cousins, Ashley Turner (8) and Hugh Turner (4).
The 1891 census records Samuel (44), a Grocer’s Assistant, Emily (43), Emily D. (17), Samuel E. (14), Frank (11), Henry (10), Gordon (6) and George Clements (64), living at 34 Northbrook Street, Newbury.
The family were again recorded living at 34 Northbrook Street, in 1901, as follows: Samuel (54) a Grocer’s Clerk, Emily (53), Harry (20), an Architect’s Clerk, Gordon (15) a Junior Corn Merchant’s Clerk, John William (8) and George Clements (74), living on his own means.
By 1903 the family were living in Gloucester Road, Newbury.
George Clements died aged 76, on the 23rd February 1903, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th February.
By 1911 Samuel (64) as working as a Domestic Gardener, living at 91 Gloucester Road, Newbury, with Emily (63) and their sons, Arthur (39) a Newspaper Journalist and John William (18) a student.
Samuel (75), a Retired Grocer’s Assistant, Emily (74) and their son John Wiliam (29), a Corn Porter, (Midwinter & Sons) were still living at 91 Gloucester Road in 1921.
Emily died aged 82 in 1929 and Samuel died aged 84 in 1931, both deaths recorded in Newbury.
