Samuel Johnson Hazell was baptised on the 11th July 1813 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Hazell and Samuel Johnson. (Father recorded as a Labourer)

In 1815 Samuel Hazel (2) was living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury, Berkshire with his mother Elizabeth Hazel (47) and his sister Elizabeth Hazel (17).

Samuel married in 1837

Marriage details:

Place: St Nicolas Church Newbury

Date: 24th September 1837

Groom: Samuel Hazell, full age, bachelor, occupation, Baker, abode, Newbury

Bride: Jane Taylor, full age, spinster, abode, Newbury

Father: Edward Taylor, a Gardener (no father recorded for Samuel)

Witnesses: James Whistler and Mary Cruse

(Jane was born on the 31st October 1811 she baptised at All Saints West Ilsley, Berkshire, on the 10th November, the daughter of Edward and Jane Taylor (nee Smith) who were married on the 20th July 1807 in West Ilsley)

The 1841 census records Samuel (25) and Jane (25) living in Fidler’s Yard, Newbury. By 1851 they were living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, Samuel was now a Master Baker.

The 1861 census records the couple living at 6 Carnarvon Terrace, Newbury, Samuel was recorded as Retired. They were once again recorded living at 6 Carnarvon Terrace in the 1871 census.

Samuel died aged 62 on the 2nd November 1875, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 5th November. His widow Jane died aged 75 in 1886, she was laid to rest with Samuel on the 8th December.

Probate: HAZELL Samuel    Effects:  under £3000    11 December. The Will of Samuel Hazell late of 6 Carnarvon-terrace West-street Newbury Berks who died 2nd November 1875 at 6 Carnarvon-terrace was proved at Oxford by Jane Hazell of 6 Carnarvon-terrace Widow the Relict the sole Executrix.
