Mary Bales
c1817-1875
Mary Gardiner was born in Tetbury, Gloucestershire. (Possibly the daughter of Samuel and Martha Gardiner (nee Cove) who were married on the 7th March 1814 in Tetbury)
Possibly Mary in the 1851 census: Mary Gardner (34), living in Church Street, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, with her brother William (29), a Cordwainer, her sister-in-law, Martha (31), her nephew Frederick William (1) and her mother Martha (66).
By 1861 Mary Gardener (44) was working as a Barmaid, lodging in Cheap Street, Newbury, Berkshire.
Mary Gardiner married Nathan Bales in 1864 (marriage registered in the September quarter, in Newbury).
(Nathan was a widower. He was baptised on the 6th February 1814, in Diss, Norfolk, the son of John (a Gardener) and Elizabeth Bales (nee West) who were married in Diss on the 6th March 1804. He married Eliza Morris in 1840 in Isleworth and they had 6 children. Nathan was widowed in 1858)
The 1871 census records Nathan (57) as a Gardener, living with Mary (54), in King’s Arms Yard, Newbury.
Nathan died aged 62, on the 25th May 1875. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th May.
Mary died aged 58, on the 29th June 1875. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd July.
Probate: BALES Mary Effects: under £200 21st July 1875 The Will of Mary Bales late of Newbury in the County of Berks Widow who died 29th June 1875 at Newbury was proved at Oxford by James Bales of Maidenhead in the said County Mediaeval Metal Worker and Stephen Knight of Newbury Tinman and Brazier the Executors.
