Hannah Atkins
1895-1874
Hannah , her parents, siblings and early life:
Hannah was baptised on the 4th June 1795 in Winterbourne, Berkshire, the daughter of John and Rosanna Farmer, (nee Bowly/Bowley) who were married on the 2nd July 1795.
Hannah’s father John was born c1766 in Berkshire
Her mother Rosanna was baptised in 1771 in Winterbourne, Berkshire, the daughter of Joseph and Jane Bowly
John and Rosanna also had the following children baptised in Winterbourne:
Mary 23rd April 1797
Lydia 24th June 1798
William 4th March 1804
Eleanor 19th October 1806
Joseph 29th January 1809
Henry 1st or 2nd June 1811
Sophia 2nd April 1815
In 1841 John, an Agricultural Labourer, Rosanna and their daughter Sophia were recorded living in Winterbourne, Berkshire.
John Farmer died aged 84 in 1848, ne was buried on the 4th June at St James the Less, Winterbourne.
The 1851 census records Rosehannah (79) as a Pauper, living alone in Winterbourne. She died late that year and was buried on the 5th December (as Rose Ann) at St James the Less, Winterbourne.
Hannah later in life:
Hannah married John Atkins (no marriage found yet!)
(John was baptised on the 24th January 1790 in Compton, Berkshire, the son of Isaac and Mary Atkins (nee Bradfield) who were married on the 20th November 1788, in Compton.
John and Hannah had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire:
John, baptised 6th July 1829, the illegitimate son of John Atkins and Hannah Farmer (died aged 7 in 1836, buried 19th August at St Nicolas Newbury)
Emma, baptised 12th June 1831 (died aged 5 in 1836, buried 23rd August at St Nicolas Newbury)
Alfred Isaac, baptised 21st July 1833 (died aged 3+ in 1837, buried 18th February at St Nicolas Newbury)
Frederick Joseph, baptised 10th January 1836 (died aged 8 months in 1836, buried 5th September at St Nicolas Newbury)
Ellen, baptised 30th July 1837
Georgina, baptised 19th July 1840
The 1841 census records John (50) as a Labourer, living in a lodging house on the east side of Northbrook Street, Newbury with Hannah (45) and their children Ellen (age mistakenly recorded as 35, possibly should read 3years 5 months) and Georgina aged 11 months.
In 1851 John (61) was recorded as a Chelsea Pensioner, living with Hannah (56), a Laundress and their daughters Ellen (13) and Georgina (10) at 16 Jack of Newbury Street, Newbury.
The 1861 census records John (70) as a Labourer living with Hannah (65), a Laundress, in Smith’s Buildings, Newbury. (Surname recorded as Alkins on ancestry)
Hannah was widowed in 1866, John died aged 76, he was buried on the 21st March 1866 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire.
The 1871 census records Hannah (76) as Formerly a Laundress, living at 1 Magdala Terrace, Newbury, with her married daughter Ellen Baylis (34), her son-in-law, Charles Baylis (37), a Plasterer and her grandchildren Ellen Baylis (5) and William Baylis (8 months).
Hannah died aged 79 on the 19th June 1874, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd June.
