Mary Susan Etty
She was born in November 1844, one of 6 children of Rev. Simeon James and Jane Etty (nee Peers), in Wanborough, Wiltshire, and she was baptised on 10 November 1844. Her father was Vicar of Wanborough from 1841 to his death in 1879. She grew up with her brothers Andrew Hooper (b.1842), Lyttelton (b.1843) and Charles John (b.1848) at Upper Town Wanborough (1851 Census) before she was educated at St. Mary’s Hall, Brighton – known as the “Clergy School”. Her other siblings were Katharine Peers (b.1839) and Jane Anne (b.1840). In 1881 she is visiting her cousin Harriet Peers in Wendover and by 1891 she has moved to live with her sister Katharine in Pyle Hill, Greenham. They are living on their own means with two servants. Their mother Jane Etty died, aged 80 years, in Greenham on 20 March 1887. Her sister Katharine died on 15 January 1900 at Belvedere Drive, Newtown Road, and Mary Susan continued to live there until she moved to St. John’s Lodge where she died on 2 August 1924, aged 79 years. Probate was granted to Rev. Charles John Etty, clerk, Mary Phyllis Katharine Etty,, spinster, and John Lyttelton Etty, esq. She was buried on 6 August 1924.
