William Eastman

1823-1873

William was born c1823 and baptised (surname recorded as Eastmond) in Kintbury Berkshire on the 23rd March 1823 he was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Eastman, born c1804 in Kintbury. Elizabeth also had another illegitimate son, Joseph Eastman who was baptised in Kintbury on the 4th May 1834.

William’s mother Elizabeth married in Newbury in 1838 (surname recorded as Easman), her husband was James Viner, a widower who was born c1802 in Hungerford. James worked as a Tanner/Tanner’s Labourer. His first wife was Charlotte Titcomb who died in 1837. Charlotte and James had three children, Jane born c1830, Mary born c1832 and William born c1834.

In both 1841 and 1851 William was recorded living in Greenham (Greenham Mills) Berkshire with his mother & step-father.

William Eastman married Eliza Wood in Newbury in 1851 and they had the following children:

Joseph born 1852    William Edward born 1855    Mary Ann born 1857    John James born 1859        Eliza born 1862

William was still living in Greenham Mills  when the 1861 census was recorded, he was working as a Tanner’s Labourer, also living in the same household were his wife Eliza and their children, William, Mary and John. William’s step-sisters Mary and Jane Viner and Jane’s daughter Martha (aged 1 month) were also recorded in the household. Mary was recorded as a lodger and Jane and Martha as visitors.

William’s wife Eliza died aged 42 and was buried in Greenham on 25th September 1865.

In 1871 William and his children, William, Mary,  John and Eliza were recorded living in Bradley’s Yard (in the parish of St Nicolas) Newbury, also recorded in the household was his step-sister Mary Viner aged 32, Lodger and Housekeeper and her son Henry Viner aged 1. Later that year William married Mary.

William Eastman died age 50 in 1873 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on 5th November.
