Elizabeth Abel
c1793-1873
Elizabeth Marshman was born in Berkshire c1793 she was the daughter of Stephen & Priscilla Marshman (nee Salter) who were married in Thatcham in 1771. Elizabeth married Samuel Gough in 1814.

Joseph Toomer’s 1815 census of Newbury records the couple as follows:
Abode: East Side of Newtown Lane Newbury
Samuel Gough, aged 22, married, occupation: Corn Porter
Elizabeth Gough, aged 22, married
Harriet Gough, infant
Elizabeth and Samuel had the following children (all baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury):
Harriet 20/1/ 1815 Sarah 14/6/1816 James 6/2/1818 William 21/1/1820 William 19/10/1821 Samuel 24/3/1824 Eliza 30/10/1825 George 29/6/1828 Thomas 3/9/1830 William Samuel 24/10/1833
Elizabeth’s husband Samuel died aged 43 in 1836 and was buried at St Nicolas Newbury on the 16th August. Elizabeth remarried the following year her 2nd husband was Robert Abel.

Fathers: Thomas Abel, occupation: Labourer and Stephen Marshman occupation: Labourer
Witnesses: Richard Brown and George Stillman
Bride and Groom both made their mark
The 1841 census records Robert and Elizabeth’s surname as Habel, they were living in Old Newtown Road Newbury and Robert was recorded as an Army Pensioner, also living with them was Elizabeth’s son, James Gough aged 20, occupation, Corn Porter’s Labourer.
Elizabeth’s husband Robert died in 1844 and was buried at St Nicolas Newbury on the 6th April.
The 1851 census records Elizabeth as a Laundress, living with her married daughter Sarah Langton and her family in Stroud Green Newbury. The 1871 census records her as a Charwoman lodging at a Public House in The City Newbury.
Elizabeth died aged 84 in 1873 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th September.
