George King
1807-1872
George, his parents, siblings and early life:
George was born on the 9th February 1807 in Newbury Berkshire, he was baptised on the on the 1st March 1807, the son of David and Hannah King, (nee Durling) nee Durling) who were married on the 17th June 1802 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.
His father David was baptised in 1779 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of John and Hannah King. David died aged 58 in 1836, he was buried on the 12th September at St Nicolas Newbury.
His mother Hannah was baptised in 1778 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughter of William and Ann Durling. Hannah died aged 64 in 1839, she was buried on the 24th August at St Nicolas Newbury
George’s siblings were (all baptised at St Nicolas Newbury):
Maria born 2nd May 1804, baptised 27th May 1804
Charles born 3rd July 1805, baptised 14th July 1805
Thomas born 30th May 1808, baptised 8th June 1808
Amelia born 15th March 1812, baptised 12th April 1812.
Hannah baptised 10th March 1816
Alfred baptised 15th November 1818
In 1815 George (8) was living on the east side of The Wash, Newbury, with his father David (35), a Maltster, his mother Hannah (37), his siblings Maria (12), Charles (10), Thomas (6), Amelia (3) and a William Church (1).
George in later life:
George married Mary Bennett on the 3rd April 1830 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. (Mary was a widow, (nee Purdue). Possible 1st husband, William Bennett married on the 13th October 1823 in Amport, Southampton, Hampshire).
George and Mary also had a son Samuel, baptised on the 16th October 1831 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.
In 1841 George (30), a Maltster’s Labourer, Mary (35) and their son David (4) were living in The City, Newbury. Their son Samuel (9) was living with his grandparents Joseph and Hannah Purdue, at 6 Bartholomew Almshouses, Newbury, Berkshire.
The 1851 census records George (44), an Agricultural Labourer, Mary (52) and their son David (14), a Shoemaker, living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury.
George (54) and Mary (63) were again recorded living in The City Newbury in the 1861 census, George was still working as an Agricultural Labourer.
Mary died aged 68 in 1865, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th June.
The 1871 census records George as an Annuitant, living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury.
He died aged 67 in 1872 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th December.
