Mary Liddiard was born c1791 in Newbury and was the daughter of William & Mary Liddiard.

Mary was married by Licence in 1815

Marriage details:

In 1815 (7th June) Charles and Mary were recorded in Joseph Toomer’s 1815 census of Newbury as follows:

Place: Central Houses, The City, Newbury

Charles Messenger aged 23, married

Mary Messenger aged 23, married

William Liddiard aged 60, married, occupation: Gardener

Mary Liddiard aged 60, married

Jane Liddiard aged 8, child

 

Charles & Mary Messenger had the following children:

Mary Ann born c1816, baptised 25/8/1816 at St Nicolas Church Newbury

Hannah Sarah born 1819, baptised in Speen 28/7/1819

Harriett born c1823, baptised in Speen 21/9/1823 Abode: Shaw

Jane born c1827, baptised in Speen 10/6/1827 Abode: Shaw

Thomas Charles born c1829, baptised in Speen 6/8/1829 Abode Shaw

 

When their daughter Mary Ann was baptised in 1816 Mary’s husband Charles was recorded as a Servant in Husbandry, living in Newbury but by 1841 Charles was an Innkeeper and the family were living in Woodspeen.

 In the 1851 census Charles (62), Mary (60) their daughter Jane (23) and their granddaughter Hannah Fidler (6) (daughter of their daughter Mary Ann) were recorded living in Southampton Terrace Newbury, Charles was recorded on this census as an Annuitant.


Mary was widowed in 1858. Charles died aged 67 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th October 1858.

In the1861 census Mary (67) was recorded as a Proprietor of Houses, living in Pleasant Place Newbury, her granddaughter Hannah Fidler (16) was still living with her at this time. Mary was still living in Pleasant Place in 1871 and at this time her granddaughter Mary Ann Sperring (daughter of her daughter Jane) was also recorded living with her.

Mary Messenger died aged 79 on the 27th April 1872 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st May.

The will of Mary Messenger late of Newbury in the County of Berkshire widow who died 27thApril 1872 at Newbury was proved at the Principal Registry by William Barnes of Eton College in the County of Buckinghamshire Confectioner & James Walter Sperring of Newbury Iron founder the Executors.

(The executors of Mary’s will were her son-laws, her daughter Hannah Sarah married William Barnes (in 1845), her daughter Jane married James Walter Sperring (in 1851).
