1865-1871

Herbert was born in Berkshire, the son of Charles and Ruth Purdue (nee Darvill) who were married in 1863.

Herbert’s family:

His father Charles was baptised on the 18th July 1824 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Charles and Ann Purdue (nee Lawrence) who were married on the 19th April 1819, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire. Charles married Elizabeth Keys in 1850 (marriage registered in Newbury) They had the following children:

Arthur Wellington, born 1852

 Helen Elizabeth, born 1854

 Charles, born 1857-1857

John Charles, born 1858

 Frederick William, born 1859-1859

In 1851 Charles (27) was recorded as a Grocer, living in the Broadway, Speenhamland, Newbury, Berkshire, with Elizabeth (29) and their daughter Catherine Maria aged 2 months.

The 1861 census records Charles (36) as a Maltster, living in a private house in Shaw cum Donnington, Berkshire, with Elizabeth (40) and their children, Catherine (10), Ellen (6) (Helen), Arthur (8) and John (2).

 Charles was widowed in 1862, Elizabeth died aged 43, she was buried on the 15th September at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw cum Donnington. Charles remarried the following year.

Herbert’s mother Ruth was born in 1833, she was baptised in 1836 in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, the daughter of John and Sarah Ward Darvill (nee Edmonds) who were married in 1818 in Princes Risborough. Ruth married Richard Darvill in 1856 (marriage registered in Newbury) The had a daughter Martha Mary, born 1st December 1858 in Whitechapel (Herbert’s half-sister). Ruth was widowed in 1861. She remarried in 1863.

Frederick Darvill born 1877 in Buckinghamshire (died 1877)

The 1871 census records Charles (46) as a Brewer, living in Shaw cum Donnington, with his 2nd wife Ruth and his children, Arthur (18), a Brewer, John Charles (12), Herbert (5), Ada (3), Edith (2) and Fanny Sarah (1).

Herbert died aged 6 years 2 months on the 28th October 1871, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st November with his aunt Martha Darvill (buried 1856, the sister of her mother Ruth).

By 1877 the family were living in Buckinghamshire.

The 1881 census records Charles (56) as a retired Brewer, living at Beech Villa, (west side of Amersham Hill) Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, with Ruth (50), Martha Mary Darvill (21), Clara (17), Ada (14), Edith (12), Fanny (11), May (9), Cecilia (8), Ethel (5) and a servant.

By 1885 Charles and Ruth were back living in Donnington, Berkshire.

They both died in 1885, Charles died aged 60 on the 13th April (buried 18th April) and Ruth died aged 52, on the 11th December (buried 15th December). Both were buried at St Mary the Virgin, Shaw cum Donnington.
