Fred Tombs
1849-1871
Fred was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Israel and Maria Tombs (nee Purdue) who were married on the 29th March 1832 in Collingbourne Dulcis Wiltshire.
Fred’s father Israel was born c1807 in Newbury Berkshire, the son of Israel and Elizabeth Tombs (nee Smith) who were married on the 2nd May 1793 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Israel died aged 81 on the 30th August 1889, he was buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd September.
His mother Maria was baptised on the 4th October 1807 in Ludgershall Wiltshire, the daughter of Joseph and Hannah Purdue (nee Parsons) who were married on the 20th October 1793 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. Maria died aged 81 on the 31st December 1889 she was buried with her husband on the 3rd January 1890.
Israel and Maria also had the following children;
Henry Holloway bon c1837 baptised either the 26th or 28th June 1837 (died aged 49 in 1887)
Edwin 1840 (died aged 58 in 1898, buried in the NRC on the 7th October)
George 1846 (died 23 in 1869, buried in the NRC on the 10th July)
Fred 1849 (died aged 22 in 1871, buried in the NRC on the 21st October)
Israel was recorded as a Dealer in 1841, 1871 and 1881, a Pork Butcher in 1851, and a Horse Dealer in 1861.
In 1841 Israel (30), Maria (30) and their sons Henry (3) and Edwin (1) were living in Victoria Place, Newbury.
The 1851 census records Fred (1) living at 84 Northbrook Street, Newbury with his parents Israel (43) and Maria (43), his brother George (4) and a visitor Hannah Purdue (86).
In 1861 Israel (53), Maria (53) and Fred (11) were living at 14 Carnarvon Terrace, Newbury
The 1871 census records Fred (21) (surname recorded as Toombs) as an Assistant Draper, working for a Draper, John Bryant (46) in Market Place, Wokingham, Berkshire.
Fred died aged 22 on the 15th October 1871, he was laid to rest in a private grave with his brother George (buried in 1869) in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st October
