James Barrett
c1807-1871
James John Barrett was born in Hilperton Wiltshire, he was baptised on the 11th October 1807 in Staverton Wiltshire, the son of James and Ann Barrett (nee Longstreet) who were married on the 24th December 1801 at St James with St Stephen Trowbridge Wiltshire.
James was a Bargeman, he married in 1838.
Marriage details: Place: Holy Trinity, St Phillip, Bristol, Gloucestershire Date: 28th May 1838
Groom: James Berrett, full age, bachelor, occ: Waterman, abode: Wade Street.
Bride: Elizabeth Fox, full age, spinster, abode: Wade Street.
Fathers: James Berrett, occ: Weaver and Samuel Fox, occ: Quarrier
Witnesses: William Tucker and Phillip Jones
Bride and Groom made their mark
James and Elizabeth had at least 4 children.
Harriet, baptised on the 3rd November 1839 at St George Bristol
Emma, baptised on the 17th October 1841 at St George Bristol
Eliza, born c1845 in Newbury, baptised 29th March 1845 at St Nicolas Newbury (died aged 4 in 1848 in Newbury)
Sam, born 1848 in Newbury, baptised (as Samuel) 26th November 1848 at St Nicolas Newbury
The 1861 census records James (53), Elizabeth (53, born in Bristol), Emma (19) and Samuel (13) living in Back Lane Newbury
Elizabeth died in 1868 in Newbury (age at death recorded as 54) she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st January.
James remarried in 1869, his 2nd wife was Hannah Bassingden (nee King), a widow. (Marriage registered in Newbury)
James died aged 64 on the 4th August 1871 he as laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th August.
Hannah died aged 72 in 1891 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th November
