Nathaniel Dredge

Nathaniel, his parents, siblings and early life:

Nathaniel and his brother David were baptised on the 13th November 1789, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the sons of James and Anna Maria Dredge.

Nathaniel’s father James was a Victualler and Basket Maker. He was born c1763. James died (of decline) aged 40, in 1803. He was buried on the 30th March, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Nathaniel’s mother Anna Maria was born c1765. She died aged 69 in 1834 and was buried on the 12th December, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

James and Anna Maria also had the following children (baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury):

William, 16th May 1792

George, 18th April 1794 (born 14th March 1794)

Richard, 5th August 1796

John, 22nd June 1798 (born 21st May 1798)

Anna Maria, 30th October 1799 (born 22nd September 1799)

Nathaniel in later life:

Nathaniel married Kezia Osman on the 24th December 1814, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury. (both were single, witnesses were William Bourn and James Wills)

(Kezia was baptised (as Caziah) on the 23rd September 1781 in Chiseldon, Wiltshire, the daughter of John and Mary Osman)

The 1815 census of Newbury records Nathaniel (28), a Coach Smith, living in Lewis’s Yard on the west side of Northbrook Street, Newbury, with Kezia (29).

Nathaniel’s widowed mother Anna Maria (47),  was recorded living at the Nags Head, on the east side of Bartholomew Street, Newbury, Berkshire, with her children,  David (21), a Basket Maker, George (20), a Smith, Richard (17), a Basket Maker, John (16), a Locksmith and Anna Maria (15).

Nathaniel and Kezia had the following children (baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury):

William, 14th October 1817 (dad recorded as a Blacksmith. William died aged 2 months, buried 22nd December, at St Nicolas, Newbury)

Nathaniel, 13th November 1818 (dad recorded as a Coachsmith)

John, 14th January 1820 (dad recorded as a Smith)

Nathaniel was widowed in 1837, Kezia died aged 51. She was buried on the 19th September at St Nicolas, Newbury.

Nathaniel remarried in 1839

Marriage details:

Date: 19th May 1839

Groom: Nathaniel Dredge, full age, widower, occupation, Coach Smith, abode, Newbury

Bride: Sarah Newth, full age, spinster, abode, Newbury

Fathers: James Dredge, a Basket Maker and John Newth, a Baker

Witnesses: Robert Newth and George Stillman

The 1841 census records Nathaniel (50) as a Bacon Factor, living in Northbrook Street, Newbury, with Sarah (45) and his son Nathaniel (20), a Carpenter.

In 1851 Nathaniel (63), a Bacon Factor and Sarah (57) were recorded living at 67, Northbrook Street, Newbury.

Nathaniel was widowed again in 1857. Sarah (60) was found drowned in the river Kennet on Friday the 7th August. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 12th August.

The 1861 census records Nathaniel (74), a Bacon Factor and his niece, Winifred Gye (17), still living at 67 Northbrook Street, Newbury.

By 1863 Nathaniel was living in a Kimber’s Almshouse with Winifred.

Nathaniel died aged 83, on the 10th February 1871. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th February.
