DEATH OF MR. EDWARD HANINGTON

It is my melancholy province to-day to record the death of Mr. Edward Hanington, an old and respected tradesman of this town, who, as most of our readers are aware, has for some time suffered from a painful illness, and who breathed his last about two o'clock on Saturday afternoon.

Among for many years one of the leading tradesmen of the town Mr. Hanington's inclinations never led him to aim at high municipal distinction; he was rather content to devote himself to the discharge of those public duties which brought him into friendly contact with his fellow-tradesmen. Hence for many years he was foreman of the Court Leet: the Horticultural Society found in him one of its ardent supporters and most active committeeman; and he took a leading part in the early closing movement and in the annual summer holiday, it being in acknowledgement of his exertions that the assistants of the town presented him some time since with a testimonial.

Mr Hanington's disposition was essentially social and friendly; at all convivial meetings his presence was looked for and appreciated, and he leaves behind him the reputation, of which any man might be proud, of being often ready to mediate between neighbours when at variance, and of having contributed in this and in other ways to promote the happiness of his fellow-men.

Extract from the history of John and Mary Hamlin by Phil Wood 2011. The full text of the article may be seen on their webpages.

At some point in the 1860s young John Hamlin came to Newbury to work as a draper’s assistant, having served his apprenticeship with John Walker in Devizes.

He was employed by Edward Hanington, who ran a shop at 19 Northbrook Street.

When Hanington died in 1870 his wife, Mary, took on the business eventually handing over to her son, Harmon.

All three Haningtons share a grave (W 151) in the Newtown Road Cemetery.
