| Transciption: | CHARLES BATT To BREWERS, PUBLICANS, and OTHERS – TO BE LET, with immediate possession, a good sized established BEER and SPIRIT HOUSE, consisting of a bar, parlour, large dining-room, tap-room, kitchen, dairy, &c. ; with 7 good sized bedrooms, closets, &c., with excellent three-quarter brewery plant, convenient cellars, yard, stabling and other out-buildings, together with a malt-house if required ; situate in the best part of Northbrook-street, Newbury, Berks, the present occupier relinquishing the same on account of ill health. The Furniture may be taken at a valuation if required. For further particulars, and to treat for the same, apply to Mr Charles Batt on the premises, or Mr William Crofts, Appraiser &c., Newbury. |

| Transciption: | CHARLES BATT SALE of a BREWERY PLANT, HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE, and FIXTURES, NORTHBROOK STREET, NEWBURY MR C W DOE is instructed to Sell by Auction, on Wednesday, the 8th day of October 1856 at 10 o’clock, on the premises, the property of Mr Charles Batt, (taken for non-payment of rent, and for the benefit of creditors), the whole of the compact BREWING PALNT, comprising of 200 gallon copper, with upperback lined with lead, liquor back and underbacks complete, 2 pair working squares, a 3 quarter mash tub, large coolers, a 400 gallon and smaller casks, lead trough, malt mill, pump and piping, and the usual brewing utensils. In the Bar is a painted counter, 4-pull beer engine and piping, a spirit engine, gas burners, and fittings, settles, benches, &c. &c. The Household Furniture consists of 4-post and other bedsteads and bedding, drawers, wardrobe, tables, chairs, Brussels and other carpets, 8-day dial, looking glasses &c. May be viewed the morning of sale |

Charles Batt
c1809-1870
Charles was born in Combe Hampshire (now Berkshire) he was baptised in Combe in 1809 and was the son of William and Jane Batt (nee Criswick) who married in Combe in 1808.
William and Jane also had the following children (all baptised in Combe):
Christopher 1808, Charlotte 1810, William 1812, Zabulan 1814, Robert 1815, Joshua 1821, Jeremiah 1822, George 1823, Mary Ann 1827 and Elizabeth 1829
Charles (surname recorded as Butt on Hardwicke’s marriage index) married Agnes Talbot in the parish church of St Mary the Virgin Speen Berkshire in 1835, they had three sons, William, born in 1837, George Joseph born 1839 (died aged 2 weeks in 1840, buried at St Nicolas Newbury on the 3rd February) and Charles born 1841.
The 1841 census records Charles (30), as a Candle Maker, living in Northbrook Street Newbury with Agnes (35) and their sons, William (3 ½) and Charles (3 months).
The 1851 census records Charles (42) as a Brewer/Innkeeper (The Bakers Arms), Agnes (48), William (13) and Charles (10), living at 16 Northbrook Street Newbury.

By 1861 Charles (55) and Agnes (60) had moved to Bartholomew Street Newbury, Charles was recorded in the 1861 census as a Lodging House Keeper.
Agnes died aged 65 in 1864 she was laid to rest in the NRC on the 25th April.
Charles died aged 61 in 1870 he was laid to rest in the NRC on the 6th December.
