Eliza House
c1837-1923
Eliza was born in Greenham Berkshire the daughter of John and Eliza Smith (nee Paine) who were married in 1827 in Greenham, Berkshire
In 1851 Eliza (14) was living in Golding’s Yard, Greenham with her grandfather Charles Payne (75), an Agricultural Labourer, her grandmother Maria Payne (66), her aunt Emma Payne (24), a Dressmaker and her widowed father John Smith (44), a Journeyman Plumber and Glazier.
In 1861 Eliza (24) was recorded as a Tailor, living in Greenham with her grandmother Maria Payne (75), a Pauper and her aunt Emma Payne (35), a Dressmaker.
Eliza gave birth to a son, John, in 1867 in Greenham.
The 1871 census records Eliza (34), as a Dressmaker living in Wither’s Yard, Newbury with her son John (4).
Eliza married Thomas Bright in 1873 (marriage registered in Newbury)
Thomas died aged 50 in 1877 and Eliza remarried in 1879. Her 2nd husband was William House, a widower).
(William was baptised in 1825 in Newtown Hampshire, the son of James and Elizabeth House (nee Bailey) who were married in Newtown in 1811. William married Mary Andrews in 1856 in Newbury. Mary died aged 40 in 1875).
The 1881 census records William House (56) as a Gardener’s Labourer living in Back Common, Newtown, with Eliza (44), her son John Smith (14), a Farm Labourer and William’s sons James House (17), a Farm Labourer, Jesse House (12), Eli House (9) and George House (7).
In 1891 William (66) and Eliza (54) were recorded living in Newtown Village.
William died aged 74 in 1899 (death registered in Kingsclere)
The 1901 census records Eliza (64) living on her own means at 2 Crown Place, Newbury, with her married son John Smith ((34), a Boot Repairer her daughter-in-law Maria (36) and her grandchildren John Henry (10), Mary H (9), Esther A (7), Arthur J (5) and a visitor, William S Mitchell (2).
The 1911 census records Eliza (74) living at 11 Bartholomew Street, Newbury with her son John and his family.
Eliza died aged 87 on Christmas day 1923, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th December.
