Louise Catherine Elliott

John Elliott (1825 – 1890)

                                    Louise Catherine Elliott (1870 – 1870)

 

John was born circa 1825 in Newbury, son of John & Elizabeth, nee Rosier, Elliott.

 

In the 1841 census John was recorded with his parents, brothers Henry aged 20, Joseph aged 10 & Arthur aged 9 and sister Mary aged 13 living at 85 Northbrook Street in Newbury. His father John was recorded as a builder as was John. Ten years later in the 1851 census John was still living at 85 Northbrook Street with his widowed mother and brothers Henry, Joseph & Arthur. John was recorded as a bricklayer as were all his brothers.

 

John married Elizabeth Thatcher in Q4 1854 in Hungerford district. Elizabeth was baptized on 3 May 1829 in Lambourn, daughter of Richard and Charlotte.

 

In the 1861 census John & Elizabeth were recorded with daughters Annie aged 5, Mary aged 3 & Ellen aged 1 in Winchcombe Place in Newbury. John was recorded as a bricklayer master.

 

In March 1870 a daughter Louise Catherine was born in Newbury. She sadly died aged two months and was buried on 6 May 1870 at Newtown Road Cemetery.

 

Ten years later in the 1871 census John & Elizabeth were recorded with children Annie Elizabeth aged 15, Mary Anne aged 13. Ellen aged 11, Henry aged 8, Kate aged 6 and William aged 4 in Bartholomew Street in Newbury. John was recorded as a bricklayer journeyman.

 

John & Elizabeth were recorded in the 1881 census with children Annie Elizabeth aged 26, Henry aged 19, Kate aged 17, George aged 15, William aged 14 and Laura aged 8 along with grandson John aged 2 in West Fields in Newbury. John was recorded as a bricklayer, Annie as a cook, Kate a domestic servant and Henry & George both bricklayers.

 

John died 26 November 1890 and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 December 1890.

 

In the Newbury Weekly News dated 11 December 1890 a death announcement appeared as below:-

 

ELLIOTT Nov 26, at Westfield Cottage, Newbury, John Elliott, aged 65. His end was peace.

 

Elizabeth was recorded in the 1891 census with children Annie Elizabeth aged 34 and Henry aged 27 along with grandsons John aged 11 and William aged 5 at 5 Marsh Street in Newbury. Elizabeth was recorded as a living on her own means and Henry a bricklayer.

 

Ten years later in the 1901 census Elizabeth was recorded with children Henry aged 36 and Kate aged 35 along with grandson Arthur William aged 15 at Cromwell Place (South Side) in Newbury. Elizabeth was recorded as a cook and Henry a bricklayer.

 

In the 1911 census Elizabeth was recorded with her daughter Annie Krauesslar (a widow) as head of the house, and also her children Henry aged 45 and Kate aged 47 along with grandson William aged 25 at 1 Gordon Terrace, Kings Road in Newbury. Elizabeth was recorded as an old age pensioner, Annie as housework, Henry a bricklayer, Kate a pensioner and William a house painter.

 

Elizabeth died 2 July 1918 while still living at 1 Gordon Terrace and was buried on 6 July 1918 at Shaw Cemetery.

 

John’s brother Arthur Elliott was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 20 January 1909.
