Charles Allum
1844-1870
Charles was born in Wantage, Berkshire, the son of Rachel Allum (nee Hedges) who married Thomas Allum on the 25th March 1827 in Wantage.
Thomas and Rachel also had the following children:
Frederick, born c1830
George born c1833
Maria, born c1836
John, born 1839 (died aged 1 in 1841)
A male child born 1842, (died 1842, without being named)
In 1851 Charles (5) was recorded as a lodger at Partridges Yard, Wantage, the home of Stephen Winterbourn (46) and his family.
The 1861 census records Charles as an Under Carter working for a John White at Warborough Farm, Letcombe Regis, Berkshire.
Charles was working as a Brewer’s Labourer in Newbury by 1870.
He died on the 3rd January 1870 at Union Chapel Yard, Newbury. His death certificate records his sister-in-law, Ann Allum (wife of his brother George) of Hassell’s Buildings Speenhamland, as present at death.
