Eliza Twitchen/Twitchin
1799-1869
Eliza was born on the 4th February 1799, in Newbury Berkshire, she was baptised on the 27th February 1799, at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughter of Richard and Anne Twitchin.
Eliza’s parents Richard Twitchen and Ann Cumner were married on the 11th October 1778, at St Nicolas Church Newbury. (Richard was recorded as a Sojourner)
Eliza’s father Richard was born c1753. (Richard Twitchen died aged 79, in 1837, he was buried 8th February, at St Mary Thatcham)
Her mother Ann was baptised on the 9th December 1753, at St Mary, Kintbury, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Rebecca Cumner. Ann died aged 63, in 1818, she was buried on the 10th October, at St Mary Thatcham, as Ann Twitching
Richard and Ann also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:

Ann Twitchen, 19th July 1781
William Twitchen, 15th September 1783
Maria Twitchen, 26th December 1785
Mary Twitchin, 25th July 1788
Richard Twitchin, 2nd December 1790
William Twitchen, 5th April 1793
Joseph Twitching, 13th July 1796
In 1815 Richard Twitchin (61), Ann (60), Richard (24), Joseph (18) and Eliza (16) were recorded living at the Black Bear Inn, on the east side of Market Place, Newbury, Berkshire.
The 1841 and 1851 census records Eliza as the Publican of the Black Bear Inn. (Surname recorded as Fritcher in 1841 and Twitchen in 1851 on ancestry)
In 1841 ten other people were also recorded living at the Inn, with Eliza aged 40. (Eliza has been mistakenly recorded as Eliza Fritcher aged 43 on ancestry)
In 1851 her niece Eliza Twitchen (18), (daughter of her brother Joseph and his wife Elizabeth (nee Street) Mary Povey (21) both House Servants, William Liddiard (33), an Ostler, a lodger and fourteen visitors were recorded living in the Inn with her.
In 1854 Eliza was allocated a Raymond’s Almshouse in Newbury.
The 1861 census records Eliza (62) living at 9 Raymond’s New Almshouses, Newbury. (Surname recorded as Twitcken on ancestry)
Eliza Twitchin died aged 72, on the 5th May 1869, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th May.
