Jane Haines
c1803-1868
Jane was baptised on the 15th November 1807 at St Mary, Reading, Berkshire, the daughter of John (a Labourer) and Hannah Strange (nee Knight) who were married on the 16th January 1803, in Whitchurch, Oxfordshire. (John was from the parish of St Mary, Reading, Berkshire, at the time of the marriage)
Hannah and John also had the following children baptised at St Mary, Reading:
George, 2nd September 1810
Maria, 19th April 1813
William, 10th June 1816
Jane married James Haines on the 13th July 1832 at St Mary, Streatley, Berkshire. James was from Tilehurst, Berkshire. Witnesses: Harriett Goodling and James George.
(James was born in Wallingford Berkshire, he was baptised on the 20th May 1804 at St Mary, Wallingford, the son of Joseph and Mary Haines (nee Anderson) who were married on the 26th October 1797, in Wallingford).
The 1841 census records Jane (30) living at Early Court, St Mary, Reading, Berkshire with her husband James (30) who was working as a Servant.
In 1851 James (46) was recorded as a Publican, (The Horn, St Mary Butts) living in St Mary’s Butts, Reading, Berkshire with Jane (46).
On the 7th December 1853 the license for the Horn, St Mary’s Butts was transferred from James Haines to Thomas Ellen.
By 1861 the couple had moved to Newbury, Berkshire. The census for that year records James (50) as a Cellarman, living at 3 Railway Terrace, Newbury, Berkshire. Jane was not home when this census was taken. There was also a lodger, Anne Taylor (52) recorded living in the household.
Jane died aged 65 on the 13th December 1868, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th December.
James died aged 67 on the 26th November 1870, he was laid to rest with Jane on the 29th November.
