According to census records William was born in Newbury Berkshire.

The UK Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Soldier Service Records 1760-1920 records William (17) enlisting in the Army (76th Regiment of Foot) in 1835. He left the Army in 1850 (on a pension from 28th May) after serving as a Private for 15 years

The 1841 census records William (20), as a Private in the Army, living in Cheap Street, Newbury

He married Emma Jane Kemp (recorded as Jane at the time of marriage) in 1850 (marriage registered in Newbury). (Emma Jane was baptised on the 8th November 1830 in Winterbourne Berkshire the daughter of Joseph and Diannah Kemp (nee Collemore) who were married in Chieveley on the 7th May 1814)

William and Emma had the following children:

Thomas Frederick born 1851 (died 1851)

Charles born c1852

James William born 1854

Albert born 1861 (died 1861 buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th September)

Peter born 1862 (baptised 7th November 1862, died 1863 buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on 20th March)

The 1851 census records William (33) as a Pensioner of the 76th Regiment, living in a cottage in Chieveley with his wife Emma (21), his in-laws Joseph Kemp (67) a Pauper/Agricultural Labourer and Diannah Kemp (58) and his sister-in-law Ellen Kemp (16).

In 1861 William (44) was recorded as a Hawker of Crockery, living at 3 Lewis Buildings, Northcroft Lane, Newbury with Emma (30), Charles (8) and William (6) (James William).

William died aged 51 in 1868, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th December.

Emma died aged 41 in 1872, she was laid to rest on the 22nd January at Greenham St Mary.
