Death of a Newbury Artist.
MR. W. H. GORE, who has recently passed away, was a well-known Newbury artist.
It is a true saying, “A Prophet is not with out honour, save in his own country.” In art circles, Mr. Gore's work was very much more highly regarded than amongst his fellow townsmen. For very many years he exhibited his pictures at the Royal Academy. I understand that a pastoral scene which was hung at the Academy in 1914, he has bequeathed to the Newbury Corporation.
He did quite a lot of portraiture and was also responsible for the War Memorial in the Congregational Church.
Mr Gore was a son of Newbury. He was born in the town. His father died when he was a boy and he was brought up by his uncle, Mr. W. Chubb, who was one of the Speenhamland Worthies.
A bachelor, Mr. Gore was 85 years of age.

Biographical Information

The articles below contain information about William Henry Gore.

William Henry Gore (1857 - 1942)

William Henry Gore (1857-1942)

W.H. Gore was born in Northbrook St and later, when his father George died moved to London Road, Speenhamland to live with his uncle William Chubb. He was a member of the Congregational Church and later painted the 1914-18 War Memorial displayed in the church. (now displayed in the Newbury Town Hall entrance)

Gore, having won prizes in the National Art Competition, entered the Royal Academy Schools. He developed two basic styles: one of pictures of animals and children; the other landscapes and rural scenes with figures. He exhibited and sold paintings widely, including St Louis and New Zealand.

More recently, in 2006, one of Gore’s paintings (In Disgrace – link) was sold by the Leverhulme Trust for £42,000. Several of his paintings are available through the internet as prints or reproductions.

William Gore lived  at No 3 Donnington Square and his simple studio in the back garden appears on the 1900 map – the large corrugated metal structure is still there today.

Newbury Museum has two of his paintings, one of a shepherd and his flock of sheep on the downs (A Pastoral) and the other (Bell Mount) of the turning to Bagnor off Lambourn Road.

Henry Gore (1857-1942) - Artist

Henry Gore was born in Newbury (Northbrook St.). When his father George died in 1864, they were taken in by his mother’s brother, William Chubb in Speenhamland. William was a hairdresser and active in the Congregational Church.

After winning a national competition, he attended the Royal Academy Schools.  He sold many paintings and exhibited widely. My favourite painting is ‘Listed’, which hangs today in London Guildhall. It shows a young man saying farewell to his sweetheart as he goes off to war.

Gore lived at 3, Donnington Square where he had a studio in the back garden. A contemporary of Vincent Van Gogh his style was much less experimental.

Three of his paintings are still owned by his family. They have given us permission to show them on our website.
