Susan Thorn née Hazell
Born 11 July 1849 in Greenham, daughter of George (45yrs.) and Sarah (35yrs.} Hazell both described as agricultural labourers on 1851 and 1871 censuses.
On 1851 census address Stroud Green, Chapetry of Greenham. Susan had one brother and four sisters.
On 1871 census address Stroud Green, Greenham – probably same as 1851 census.
She married Henry Thorn in 1871.
By 1881 census she was a widow, Henry Thorn having died June 1879 aged 33years. He was born in 1845 to Thomas and Eliza Thorn at Welford. Thomas was a labourer born in Welford 1811.
On 1881 census Susan was still living on Stroud Green, Greenham with three sons and two daughters all under 10 years of age. She is described as a laundress.
She was still a laundress on the 1891 census but now living on Enbourne Road.
She still has three sons and three daughters living at home. The youngest, Anne, born on 8 July 1888!!
Address on 1901 census was 1, Shrewsbury Terrace, Greenham Street, Thatcham. The head of the household is a widower, John Pembroke. Susan was described as a servant – housekeeper domestic. Two sons and two daughters were still living at home the youngest Katie born in 1893, all described as boarders on the census. John Pembroke was born in Bucklebury and was a wood dealer.
On 1911 Census she was living at 1 Kew Cottages, Buckingham Road. She was the head of the household still described as a widow and again a laundress as was Kate her only child still living at home.
On 1939 register she is described as incapacitated and is living with her daughter Kate, now married to Albert Butler, at Wasing East Lodge, Bradfield. Also in the household is Annie, now Eaton, described as doing unpaid domestic duties.
Susan died in 1941 aged 92 of senile dementia.

Susan and Henry had a son named George Hazell Thorn, the Hazell family were not happy about Hazell being his second name. ( See Emma Dunlop-Walters). He married Minnie Matilda Partridge in Dec 1902. They had a daughter Annie born 1903 who died aged 20days.
