Recorder's Notes | Gladys was the daughter of Thomas & Florence. She lived with her widowed mother in Chieveley & Madeira Place, Newbury. No record of occupation found so far. Her Uncle Robert Charles Long, son of Ald. Robert Long & Mary, is buried with her. Robert Christopher Long was living with his grandparents in Wash Common in the 1871 census, then with his family at 138 Bartholomew St. In 1891 he was recorded as a Journalist & Author, visiting medical student, Montague Hopson of Newbury in Kensington. By 1900 he is recorded as being a Prison Warder at Wandsworth Prison SW18, first of all living in Officer's Quarters then at various addresses in Wandsworth & Balham, SW18 until his death. THE .LATE MR.R.C.LONG SON OF A FORMER MAYOR OF NEWBURY The death took place at Wandsworth on February 18th of Mr. Robert Christopher Long at the age of 71. He was the second son of the late Alderman Robert Long, J.P., who was Mayor of Newbury on two occasions, in 1889 and 1896, and the late Mrs. Long of Bartholomew-street, Newbury. He started his career on the reporting staff of the Newbury Weekly News,and later joined another provincial newspaper. Mr. Long served during the Boer War with the 5th Dragoon Guards with his brother, Walter, and went through the siege of Ladysmith. For over 20 years he was on the clerical staff of Wandsworth Prison, retiring in 1928. The funeral took place at the Newtown-road Cemetery, Newbury, on Thursday, the deceased being laid to rest in the family grave. The mourners were Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Carter and Mrs. T.K. Place (nieces), Mrs. K.R. Long (sister-in-law), Mrs. C. Cosburn. Others present included Mrs. Church,Mrs. Booth, Mr. Charles Cooke, Mr. G.E.Willis (representing Mr. Hugh Turner and Mr Ashley Turner), Mrs Nicholson. Wreaths were from: Walter and Jennie (Canada); Ruth, Frank and Diana; Dorothy and Tom; Mabel, Reginald, and Baby Jane; Meme and Arthur; Madge and Pom; Alf, Geoff and Paul; Mont and Kitty; Clara.
