Mary Ann Smith
1839-1920
Mary Ann Palmer was born in Speen, Berkshire the daughter of Moses and Harriet Palmer (nee Mile) who were married on the 2nd June 1828 in Hampstead Marshall Berkshire (Harriet was recorded as Harriot Mial at time of marriage).
Moses was born c1800 in Speen, Berkshire and was a Labourer. Harriet was born c1811 in Hampstead Marshall, Berkshire.
Moses and Harriet also had the following children:
Henry c1831, John c1832, Emma c1834, Alfred c1835, Mary c1837 (died aged 18 months) Harriet c1841, Ann 1844, George c1847, Frederick 1849 and Albert 1852 (baptised Moses Albert) (all born in Speen).
In both the 1841 and 1851 census records the family were recorded living in Speenhamland.
Mary Ann’s father died aged 57 in 1857 he was buried on the 24th March at St Mary the Virgin Speen.
Her mother was recorded living at St John’s Place, Speen in the 1861 census and Speenhamland in the 1871 census. She died aged 61 in 1871 and was buried on the 6th August at St Mary the Virgin Speen.

George was born in Stockcross Berkshire in 1838, the son of Mark and Elizabeth Smith (nee Watts). He was recorded as a Groom in 1861, a General Labourer in 1871, a Gardener in 1881, a Groom (not Domestic) in 1891 and a Domestic Coachman in 1901
Mary and George had the following children: Mary Ann born c1859, Willie born 1862, Clara Elizabeth born c1866, George born c1868, Isaac born 1870, Richard born c1873 and Edward born c1877. (All the children were born in Speen apart from Richard who was born in Shaw).
The family were recorded living in St John’s Place, Speen in 1861, Speenhamland in 1871 and 1881 and Goswell Row, Speen in 1891. George and Mary were still living in Goswell Row in 1901 but by 1911 they had moved to 12 Church Almshouses, Newtown Road, Newbury.
George died aged 75 on the 11th March 1915, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th March.
Mary Ann died aged 81 on the 30th December 1920, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st January 1921 with her husband. (Abode at time of death: 5 Trafalgar Place, Newbury)
Their son Willie died aged 67 on the 15th October 1929, he was laid to rest with his parents in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th October. (Abode at time of death: 5 Trafalgar Place, Newbury)
