Joseph Leman Rowson

1843-1920

Joseph, his parents, siblings and early life:

Joseph Leman Rowson was born in 1843 in Lincolnshire, he was baptised Joseph Lemon on the 23^rd September 1843, at St Nicholas, Swaby, Lincolnshire, the son of Lemon (a Tailor) and Richenda Rowson (nee Riches) who were married on the 1^st May 1842, at St James, Spilsby, Lincolnshire.

Joseph’s father Lemon Plant (mistakenly recorded as Leonard Plants on FMP and Simon Plant on Freereg.org) was baptised on the 2^nd October 1819, at St Nicholas, Swaby, Lincolnshire, the son of Thomas (a Shoemaker) and Jane Rowson (nee Plant) who were married on the 17^th July 1815, at Burgh le Marsh, Lincolnshire. Leaman died aged 79 in 1898. He was buried on the 20^th July, at St Mary Tetford, Lincolnshire.

Joseph’s mother Richenda was baptised on the 9^th November 1815, at St James, Spilsby, Lincolnshire (mistakenly recorded as Richender Richard on Freereg.org and Rickender Richards on FMP) the daughter of James (a Thresher) and Judith Riches (nee Sheen) who were married on the 10^th June 1813, at Little Melton, Norfolk. (James was from Spilsby, Lincolnshire. Witnesses, Sophia and Harriet Sheen). Richanda died aged 90, in 1903. She was buried on the 12^th November, at St Mary Tetford.

Lemon and Richenda also had the following children:

Enoch, baptised 27th June 1844, at St Nicholas, Swaby (name at birth registered as Lemon, died aged 14 days, buried 11^th July at St Nicholas Swaby)

Anna, baptised 25^th December 1845, at St Nicolas, Swaby

In 1851 Joseph (7) was living in Swaby, Lincolnshire with his father Lemon (31), a Master Tailor, his mother Richenda (33) and his sister Anna (5).

The 1861 census records Lemon (41) as a Tailor employing 1 man, Richenda (43), Joseph (17), a Tailor, Hannah (Anna) (15), a Dressmaker, Charles (4) and a lodger, Willbe Rowson (44) a Shoemaker, (Lemon’s brother) living in Swaby.

 Joseph and Margaret had the following children:

Ada, born 1868, baptised aged 10, on the 3^rd August 1879, at St Margaret, Salmonby, Lincolnshire

Laura, born 1870, baptised 31^st December 1879, at St Mary, Horncastle

John Henry Leeman, born c1872, baptised 31^st December 1879 with sister Laura, at St Mary, Horncastle

The 1871 census records Joseph (27), a Tailor, Margaret (24) and Joseph’s brother Charles (14), living at 26 East Street, Horncastle, Lincolnshire.

Joseph was widowed in 1872, Margaret Annie died aged 25, she was buried on 2^nd June, at St Mary, Horncastle, Lincolnshire.

Joseph remarried in 1873, in Lincolnshire. His 2^nd wife was Georgiana Rawlinson.

(Georgiana was born in 1845, in Lincolnshire, she was baptised on the 29^th December 1845, at St Thomas, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, the daughter of Henry (a Butcher) and Martha Rawlinson (nee Goodwin) who were married on the 27^th September 1841, in Kingston upon Hull, York. In 1871 Georgiana gave birth to an illegitimate son, Frederick Brian, who was baptised on the 11^th December 1871, at St Mary Tetford, Lincolnshire).

Joseph and Georgiana had the following children:

Lionel Frederick, born 1874 (baptised 24^th March 1878, at St Mary, Telford)

Ernest, born c1878 (baptised 24^th March 1878, at St Mary, Telford with brother Lionel)

Martha Florence, born 1880 (baptised 1^st April 1880, at St Mary, Horncastle)

Celia, baptised 20^th May 1883, at St Mary, Horncastle

Henrietta, born 1886 (baptised 30^th August 1887, at St Mary, Horncastle)

The 1881 census records Joseph Leaman (36) as a Tailor and Outfitter, living in Marcham Row, Horncastle, with Georgina (35), Laura (10), Lionel Frederick (6), John Henry Leeman (9), Ernest (3) and Martha Florence (1).

In 1891 Joseph (46) was recorded as a Tailor and Hatter, he was still living at 3 Marcham Row, with Georgiana (44), Laura (20), John H. L. (19), a Tailor, Ernest (13), Martha F. (11), Celia (7) and Henrietta (4).

By 1901 Joseph (57) was working as a Tailor’s Cutter, living at 2 Waterloo Villas, Newbury, Berkshire, with Georgina (55), Martha Florence (21), School Teacher, Celia (17), a School Teacher and Henrietta (14). (Surname mistakenly recorded as Lowson on ancestry)

The 1911 census also records Joseph (67) as a Tailor’s Cutter. He was recorded living at 67 Gloucester Road, Newbury, with Georgina (65) and Martha (31), an Elementary School Teacher.                                                                                                                                                Joseph Leman died aged 77, on the 12^th July 1920. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16^th July.

In 1921 Georgina (75) was living at 4 Chesterfield Road, Newbury, with her daughters Martha Florence (43), an Elementary School Teacher, Henrietta Rawlinson (34), her grandchildren, Bridget Mary Goodwin Rawlinson (10), Peter Marmaduke Goodwin Rawlinson (7) and two visitors, Marmaduke Rawlinson (69) and Margaret Rawlinson (65) (Georgiana’s brother and his wife).

Georgiana’s daughter Celia died 42, on the 13^th April 1926, at University College Hospital, London. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16^th April.

Georgiana died aged 82 on the 23^rd May 1928, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery, with Joseph, on the 26^th May.
