Mary Elizabeth Summersby
1854 – 1920
Mary Elizabeth was born in Cumberland, she was baptised on the 26th November 1854 at All Saints, Cockermouth, Cumberland, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Graham (nee Dawson) who were married in 1829 in Crosthwaite, Cumberland.
Mary’s father Joseph was born c1807 in Winscales, Cumberland and was a Tinman & Brazier. He died aged 68 on the 18th October 1875 in Cockermouth.
Her mother Elizabeth was baptised in 1808 in Penrith, Cumberland, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Dawson (nee Stewartson) who were married in 1805 in Penrith. Elizabeth died aged 76 in 1885 in Whitehaven, Cumberland.
Joseph and Elizabeth also had the following children:
Jane baptised 31st December 1832 at Boroughbridge, Yorkshire
Deborah baptised 21st August 1834 at St Mary, Bishophill Senior, York
Ann baptised 9th October 1836 at Christ Church Harrogate, Yorkshire
They also had the following children baptised at All Saints Cockermouth:

Deborah 14th October 1838
Margaret 11th April 1841
Joseph 14th September 1845
Christopher 21st November 1847
Sarah 13th January 1850
William 16th January 1853
Robert William 4th January 1857
In 1861 Mary Elizabeth (6) was living in Market Place, Cockermouth with her parents and siblings, Ann (24), Joseph (15), Sarah (11) and Robert William (4).
The 1871 census records Mary Elizabeth (16) living in Denton’s Yard Cockermouth with her parents and her brother Robert (14).
Mary Elizabeth married James Summersby on the 27th June 1875 in Crosthwaite, Cockermouth.
(James Summersby was born in 1852 in Newtown Hampshire, he was baptised on the 26th December 1852 in Newtown, the son of Charles (an Innkeeper) and Caroline (mistakenly recorded as Charlotte) Summersby (nee Stroud) who were married in 1846 in Newbury (Caroline was a widow (formerly Bailey).
James and Mary Elizabeth had the following children:
Twin sons born c1876 (both boys died without being named in c1876 in Cockermouth)
Annie Jane born 1877 in Cockermouth (died aged 16 1893, in Savernake, Wiltshire, buried in the NRC on the 17th November)
Charles born c1879 in Cockermouth
James born 1882 in Perth Scotland
Elizabeth Graham born 1884 in Newtown Hampshire
Joseph Graham born 1885 in Newtown Hampshire
Caroline Winifred born 1887 in Newtown, Hampshire
Margaret Matilda Stewardson born 1890 in Newbury
Stanley born 1892 in Newbury
Mary Ellen born 1895 in Newbury
The 1881 census records Mary Elizabeth (26) as a Fancy Goods Dealer, living at 34 Pow Street, Cockermouth, with her children, Annie (3), Charles (2) and her niece Julia Wormsley (18).
In 1891 Mary Elizabeth (36), a Shopkeeper, James (38), a General Labourer and their children, Annie (18), Charles (12), James (10), Elizabeth (8), Joseph (5), Caroline (3) and Margaret (1), were living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, Berkshire.
The 1901 census records Mary Elizabeth (47) as a self-employed Wardrobe Dealer, living at 108 Bartholomew Street Newbury, with her children Elizabeth (16), a Paper Bag Maker, Joseph (15), a Domestic Groom, Caroline (13), Margaret (11), Stanley (9), Mary Ellen (6) and her granddaughter Kathleen Louisa aged 4 months (the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Summersby)
In 1911 Mary Elizabeth (56) was recorded living at 28 Cologne Road, Battersea, with her children, Margaret (21), a Barmaid, Stanley (18) a Wood Yard Worker, Mary Ellen (16), her grandson Thomas Gordon Summersby (1) (the illegitimate son of Margaret Summersby) and a visitor, Clara Smith (25), a Barmaid.
Mary Elizabeth died aged 66 on the 5th April 1920, in Wandsworth, her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest with her daughter Annie Jane (buried in 1893) in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th April.
