In Cherished memory/ and a token of love to/ our dear one/ Herbert SMITH 2/5 North Fus. & 13th B.L.I./ who died of wounds received in Action Sept. 21 1917 aged 39./ He was interred in Bedford House Cemetery, Lillebeke/ one mile south of Ypres./ From his sorrowing wife and children./ "He fought the good fight and died that we might live."

THE LATE EX P.C. G. H. SMITH
The death of Ex. P.C. G.H. Smith took place on Saturday last at his residence, Malta Villas, Kings-road, Newbury, after a painful illness patiently borne for some six months. The deceased came to Newbury as a Police Constable about 27 years ago, and some seven years later retired on a pension, his chief hobby being gardening; he was also interested in bell ringing and was a member of the St Nicolas team of ringers.

The funeral took place on Tuesday, the first portion of the service being taken in St Johns' Church, the vicar, the Rev. A.G.P. Baines officiating. The remains were interred in Newbury Cemetery, in the same grave as his late wife who predeceased him seven years ago.

The mourners were Edwin and Joseph (sons), Charlotte, Edie, Adelaide and Winifred (daughters), Mrs Herbert Smith (whose husband died of wounds in France, last September) and Mrs Joseph Smith (daughters in law), Mrs Thomas Sillar (sister), and several old friends were at the graveside. The Berks County Police were represented by Sergeants Pounds, Hutson, Wells, Pinchin and PCs Mortimer and Portlock.

Floral tributes were sent tributes were sent from Dot, Nell and Alf, Daughter-in-law Lizzie and children, Edwin and Mabel, Edie and Tom, Adelaide and Lionel, Joe and Louie, Win and Frank and grandson. Mrs W. Hill, Mrs Tottle and Mrs Crawshaw.

The coffin bore the nameplate inscribed “George Henry Smith, died August 24th 1918, aged 66 years.”

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs Hart and Sons.

George Henry was born in Newnham Murren Oxfordshire he was the son of Daniel and Sarah Smith (nee Davy) who were married in Tilehurst Berkshire on the 15th October 1835. Daniel was born c1800 at Ufton Court Berkshire and Sarah was born c1808 in East Stratton Hampshire.

Daniel and Sarah also had the following children:

Elizabeth c1837 born Tilehurst

Harriet c1839 born Tilehurst

Mary Davy 1841 born Tilehurst

Charlotte Maria 1844 born Tilehurst

Emma c1850 born Newnham Murren

In 1841 Daniel (40), Sarah (30) and their children, Elizabeth (4), Harriet (2) and Mary (2 months) were living in Norcot Tilehurst, Sarah’s mother Mary Davy (60) was also living with them.

In 1851 the family were living in Newnham Murren Oxfordshire and Daniel was working as a Farmer’s Bailiff.

In 1861 George (9) ( recorded as Henry)  was living in South End Garsington Oxfordshire with his father Daniel (59) Farm Baliff and his sisters Emma (11) and Mary D (19) (Mary was recorded as a visitor) . His mother Sarah was not at home when this census was taken she was recorded as a visitor in the household of Shadrach Gray at the High Street Chalgrove Oxfordshire. (Shadrach was Daniel and Sarah’s son-in-law he married Harriet Smith in 1860. Harriet gave birth to a daughter 6 days before the census was taken. Sarah was recorded as a Nurse on the census so possibly nursing her daughter and granddaughter).

In the 1871 census George (20) (recorded as Henry) was recorded as an Agricultural Labourer, living at Blackbirds Lodge Littlemore Newnham Courtney with his father Daniel (70), Ag. Shepherd, mother Sarah (63) and his niece Mary A Cuss (7), also recorded in the household, as a visitor, was Susan Sellar (22), Genreral Servant. George joined the Police Force and married Susan Sellar later that year (In 1861 Susan and her family were living next door to the Smith family in Garsington).

George’s father Daniel died aged 73 in 1872 (death registered in Abingdon)

 

George and Susan had the following children:

In 1881 the family were living in the village of Marcham Berkshire. The 1891 census records the family living on the Main Road in Stanford on the Vale Berkshire. In both census records George was recorded as a Police Constable.

By 1891 the family had moved to Newbury. Both the 1901 and 1911 census records record George as a Pensioned Police Officer living with his family at Malta Cottage King’s Road Newbury.

Susan died aged 63 in 1911 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th July

George died aged 66 in 1918 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th August.
