DEATH OF STATION-MASTER
TWENTY-ONE YEARS AT NEWBURY
The Townspeople heard with great regret of the death of Mr. George Kenerrick North, which took place on Monday, following a seizure a day or two previously. Mr. North had had previous illnesses, but latterly had appeared to be in his usual health.

He had been stationmaster at Newbury for Twenty-on years, being appointed to the post in 1897, in succession to Mr. Henry Weaver, who removed to Reading, subsequently to Paddington. Mr. North had previously been on the staff at Swindon, and for nine years was station-master to Twyford, the junction station for Henley, the traffic to which in the river season, was very heavy. During the last twenty years there have been great developments and increased responsibilities in the railway work at Newbury. He was in charge during the difficult transitional period of the re-building of the station, but had the satisfaction of having better accommodation for the transaction of business. Mr. North devoted himself to railway interests, and therefore had little time for public affairs. He was an enthusiastic Mason, and generally attended their gatherings. In the discharge of his duties as stationmaster, Mr. North was courteous and obliging, and ever ready to help a prospective traveller as to the best route and times. No trouble was too great, and he did it in a kindly genial way which won him a host of friends, who mourn his death. He wife died some years ago, and a son and two daughters survive.

The funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, the first part of the service in St. John’s Church, the interment in Newbury Cemetery. There was a large attendance of G.W.R. officials, Freemasons and townspeople.

THE LATE MR G.K.NORTH
MEMORIAL TESTIMONIAL
Mr North was station master at Newbury for 21 years. He was so well known in the Town and District for his courteous and kindly manner, in a thousand and one ways. That it is not necessary for further praise. For a considerable time his health was very indifferent, doubtless caused by the long and anxious duties that fell to him in the re-construction of the splendid New Station, and the swift and heavy war work which also includes the gigantic business at the Racecourse. It was known to his personal friends the real grief he bore, by the total breakdown of his only son's health, and the fact that he had become a permanent invalid.

The Committee, whose names are given below, has been formed to raise a fund for his family, and to help to do for them what he, alas, can never do again.

COMMITTEE:- Adrian Hawker, Esq., Mayor of Newbury, Chairman; Alderman J. Rankin, Councillors J. Stradling and F. C. Hopson, Messrs E. P. Plenty, H. Dolton, E. Midwinter, E.J. Forster. Alderman J.N. Day, Hon Secretary. J. Brighton, Cheap Street, Newbury; William Brain, Market Street, Newbury, Joint Assistant Secretaries.

All subscriptions will be officially acknowledges and published in the “Newbury Weekly News.”
