Recorder's Notes Inscriptions for Dick Austin and Louise V Austin are memorials only. Both died outside of Newbury and are buried elsewhere, Dick Austin in a Copmmonwealth War Grave ==== Note from Doug Larsen Elizabeth, Sue and Jan discovered a mystery monument when they were doing some recording near footpath 2. The “real” monument was for the Frances Barnard and Ernest Gilbert Kimber family (Ref Mrs P. Ch3(B)). That was all fairly standard. But they also found, leaning against the monument, a small bible shaped stone which had names from an Austin family, apparently no connection with the Kimbers. I took a note of the names on the book and compared them to other Austins in the cemetery. I’m convinced that they are some of the children of the George and Mary Austin family which are at P3 near the LH gate of the Lodge. This is a grave that we know pretty well because it is one of our War memorials that we place poppies on; Dick Austin being a service man who died at Poelcapelli in 1917. George and Mary had a lot of children, if the names on the book are to be believed, many of whom died young. The names on the book are Gwendolin, Thomas, Kathleen, Leslie, Mary all said to be children of George and Mary Austin. I believe they had no room on their monument so had to make this one to lay on top of the existing monument. Somehow it got separated and was found about 25m away in Area 2(A). Out of interest I have prepared a table of their deaths and ages just to verify that my assumption is correct George 11/12/16 Age 66 Mary 21/12/1917 Age 68 Dick 12/10/1917 Age ? Buried at Poelcapelli Louise 18/12/1922 Age? Died in Umtali (Brian will know where this is!) Gwendolin 18/11/1890 Age 2 Thomas 17/2/1892 Age 2 Kathleen 3/7/1894 Age 1 Eleanor Leslie M 29/2/1896 Age 17 Mary Ellen 10/10/1924 Age 77 I assume the last person, Mary Ellen, was a sister of George. Unfortunately I couldn’t find the family in the census records of Ancestry which would have verified al lot of these things So if you agree I suggest we move the “book” to its rightful place at P3. I was able to lift it but it really needs 2 people to carry it Regards Doug
