Transciption: | Charles Haddy – d. November 30th 1917 Postmaster and Wesleyan Methodist Sunday School Superintendent
Charles Haddy, born at Ivy-bridge in Devon, married Sarah Ann Radford in October 1876. They had a son, Arthur Boxall Haddy. Charles spent his entire working life with the Post Office beginning with the telegraph department in Exeter and then becoming postmaster at Lostwithiel, Shaftesbury, Northallerton, and Bromsgrove. He was a Wesleyan Methodist, and took a special interest in Sunday Schools in his home town, being secretary and superintendent at both Lostwithiel and Bromsgrove. Retiring after 41 years’ service, Charles came to live in Clifton Road, Newbury, where his son was employed on the postal staff. When the superintendent of the Newbury Wesleyan Sunday School was called up for military service, Charles took over the role and continued to oversee the Sunday School until he died. His funeral took place in the Wesleyan Church. Many people gathered at the church and the graveside to show their respect to a man who had only lived here for a short time, but who, nevertheless, had made a very impressive mark on the town.
