Frances Aplin
c1832-1917
Frances, her parents and siblings:
Frances was baptised on the 26th February 1832, in Newtown, Hampshire, the daughter of Benjamin (a Farmer) and Mary Aplin (nee Holdway) who were married on the 23rd September 1821, in Newtown, Hampshire. (Benjamin was from the parish of Speen)
Frances’s mother Mary was baptised on the 19th February 1787, in Newtown, Hampshire, the daughter of John and Frances Holdway (nee Harding) who were married on the 26th December 1785, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury (John was from Newtown).
Her father Benjamin was baptised (aged 3 months), on the 25th December 1788, in Atworth, Wiltshire, the son of Robert and Sarah Aplin (nee Been/Beer) who were married on the 14th February 1782, at St Swithin, Walcot, Somerset.
Benjamin and Mary also had the following children baptised in Newtown (Benjamin recorded as a Coachman on all the baptism records):
Robert, 4th March 1823
Benjamin, 1st May 1825
Mary Sarah, 18th August 1826
John, 30th September 1827
In 1841 Benjamin (50), a Farmer, Mary (50) and their children, Benjamin (15) and Fanny (5), were living in Burghclere, Hampshire.
Frances’s mother Mary died aged 56, in 1843 (death registered in Kingsclere)
In 1851 Frances’s father Benjamin (60) was working as a Labourer, living in Newbury Road, Kingsclere, Hampshire.
Benjamin died aged 70 in 1862. He was buried on the 5th July, at St Mary, Greenham
Frances in later life:
Frances was a Dressmaker.
The 1861 census records her aged 29, lodging in Westcombes Buildings, Northbrook Street, Newbury, With a Mary Westcombe (62), a Proprietor of Houses and Jane Burnett (70), a Seamstress.
In 1871 Frances (37) was recorded as a Servant, living at 8 Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with a widow, Sarah Westcombe (49) and her children.
The 1881 census records Frances (48) boarding with a Sarah Nailor (48) at 3 Trafalgar Place, Newbury.
Frances continued to live in Trafalgar Place, Newbury until her death in 1917, but by 1901 she had moved to number 6 and was living alone.
Frances died aged 85, on the 25th August 1917. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th August.
Probate: APLIN Frances of Trafalgar-place Newbury Berkshire spinster died 25th August 1917 Probate Oxford 8th October to Sarah Maria Higgs widow and Henry John Bailey post office clerk. Effects: £332 6s 8d
